Turnstile has expanded beyond the realm of hardcore. I met my friends partner for the first time last week and we talked about music for a bit. When I mentioned bands like Drug Church and Fiddlehead he was just ??? but he was like “I just checked out this band called Turnstile.” They’re starting to reach people who don’t even actively participate in any kind of music subculture.

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

I think you are really overestimating how much people miss Title Fight. Could they sell out a 1-3k room if they did a one off? Probably. 9000k at an outdoor show? Hahahaha. That's something that will probably never be replicated again unless Turnstile does it themselves.

That said, I'd be happy to eat crow if proven otherwise.

If Turnstile's gonna do amphitheater's with anyone it's gonna be with the amphitheater lawn seat Groupon kings themselves: 311

  7. I don't see this sudden boost in popularity for Turnstile really lasting that long, honestly. Probably all depends on the next album's success. If it doesn't do as well as Glow Up, I think they'll be right back to where they were a year ago. That's just my hunch, at least.

Tbh Im a little afraid Turnstile will burn out at some point and go into hiatus.

Yeah Turnstile’s sudden bump into popularity was surprising for me. I expect them to either somewhat maintain what they have going on now, or quietly go back to how they were doing before

This is exactly where my head is at. They're currently riding an album that allowed them to keep most of their prior fans and gain a bunch of new ones. But I get the sense that a lot of the newer fans they're gaining are just kinda riding the hype train and after seeing them live once or twice, they'll probably just move along to the next thing.

I know that sounds cynical, but at this point, we've seen it before. Hardcore bands don't typically maintain "critical darling status" and popularity for more than an album cycle or two. There's a pretty large margin for error with their next album in terms of maintaining popularity and it'd be a pretty epic feat if they could pull it off.

That said, I think they're comfortably in a spot where even a large dip in popularity would still see them in a spot where they can play decent-sized venues the rest of their careers. So good on them for that achievement unlock!

Does anyone think Turnstile might drop most of their hardcore elements in future releases? I'm curious.

I'm probably way off and you can all you smack me out of here for this opinion, but I feel like Turnstiles new stuff sounds sort of like the beasite boys did and appeals in the same way and that's why it's gotten them mainstream(ish) appeal (still hovering around a million plays a month on spotify so not quite a household name yet). It sounds aggressive without actually being aggressive. The vocals are yelled vs screamed, and the guitars are not full on distorted heavy either. Basically, for people just finding them, it's that perfect balance of angry sounding music, but not like 'oooo why he's so angry?!?!'. I mean the mix between Real thing on time and space (super driving, everything blends together, vocals are harsher) vs mystery where all the instrumental lines are distinct and the vocals just sit on top is telling.

The only way I would welcome a Turnstile hiatus is full time Trapped Under Ice

And that ain't happening as long as Angel Dust is still popping a bit.

I could def see a hard pivot coming. Wouldn’t mind to see them make a Ok Computer > Kid A type pivot.

    Get weird and vibey.

I feel like this was hardcore bones with hip hip / indie pop influences, and I feel like the opposite would be ideal for their next release.

Release My Mind, My Garden Grows

I think if you look at the outliers on Glow On (Underwater Boi, New Heart Design, Alien Love Call, Lonely Dezires) you can get a good sense of where they might wanna go with it all. Mostly songs like the ones I mentioned with a few fast rippers in there for the live shows. I can see that formula working for them but they need some big moments like Holiday/Mystery in there too.

Yeah I think part of their success is very much their aesthetic appeal. And with this cycle they’ve really branched into the whole “hardcore-turned-hipster” look/vibe. It would probably benefit them if they branched even further into the dreampop/shoegaze realm with their next album. Or maybe it wouldn’t. What do I know?
