Don’t think I’ve posted enough times in a row in this thread…

Fox and Hare #1 by Jon Tsuei & Stacey Lee, published by Vault, finally came out today after being delayed a bit. It’s good. A lot of table setting throughout the issue, which took a bit to get into. But, the aesthetic carried me through, and the issue ultimately made me interested in more. It’s nice having a new comic drawn by Stacey Lee, whose work on Marvel’s Silk is what made me love that character.

Amazing Spider-Man #2, a.k.a. #896, was also good. Between these first couple issues and the FCBD short story, I’m really loving what Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr., & Scott Hanna are doing here. It has all the trademarks of grounded, down on his luck Spidey comics of the past, without feeling like a lesser version of specific past stories.

Would you say Amazing Spider-Man is a good jumping on point for new readers?

    I would say so.

There’s a time jump between the end of the last run and this new #1, with a mystery to what happened during those months. So, there’s not that much you need to know outside of the most general “who is Spider-Man” stuff one would know from general pop culture. And, when there is a reference to something from recent Spider-Man or other Marvel comics, I think it’s typically something you can gloss over and be fine.

I guess the one thing that’d be helpful to know for this arc is that Peter’s friend and roommate from the last run, Randy, is dating the Beetle, who’s the daughter of the crime boss Tombstone. (Don’t know if it’ll be relevant, but Randy’s dad is Joe Robertson from the Daily Bugle, who has history with Tombstone.)

That was 100% my first thought as well. I have trouble believing the modern corporate structure would be willing to have their main, original Spider-Man married, but it certainly feels a little closer to being possible.

I also just wanna see him draw more.

New series by Christopher Cantwell & Germán García. I like García’s art a lot, and I hear great things about Cantwell’s writing, so I’ll probably check this out.

I can’t emphasize enough how big an impact Tim Sale’s art had on me. My now well worn hardcover of Spider-Man: Blue was a fucking revelation. Dude was my favorite artist for, idk, probably close to a decade.

I remember obsessing over his fluid illustration style. I remember reading his old website, where he’d talk about non-comics influences on his art, like fashion illustrator Renè Gruau. Buying whatever I could with his art in it. Even though his place as my favorite artist was ultimately taken by Jaime Hernandez and the also-gone-too-soon Darwyn Cooke, he’s still in my top tier… and absolutely the most influential artist on my personal tastes, still to this day. I can’t emphasize enough how much his art unlocked for me.

RIP to an absolute irreplaceable fucking legend.

On a more positive note, Do a Powerbomb #1 by Daniel Warren Johnson came out this week and was great.

@Henry did you hear about this comic? Seems like something you’d be really into.

The news of Tim Sale’s passing really got me as the artist behind my favorite books from the big two in Spider-Man: Blue and The Long Halloween. I was lucky enough to meet him a few years ago at Heroes Con in Charlotte and was able to tell him how those books are what spurred my love of comics and that his art introduced me to why comics are so unique and special though the visual style it brings. Definitely will be pulling out my copies of those books this weekend and am very thankful to have had the opportunity to get those signed and tell him how much his work impacted me while I had the chance.

This story has been in limbo for over three decades! I believe just the first couple issues of this arc (the second by Gaiman & Buckingham) were released by Eclipse before it folded.

I have all the Marvel reprints of the Alan Moore run and Gaiman’s “Golden Age” arc, but have only read bits of Moore’s run. Excited to do a proper read through before “Silver Age” comes out. Wonder if they’re still gonna do “Dark Age” eventually to complete the intended trilogy.

  22. I've bought a lot of graphic novels in the last few months that I've yet to get to, quite a few of which were from First Second. I'm surprised to find that I gravitated toward a publisher that happened to not be Marvel/DC/Image/Dark Horse. I think someone mentioned The Magic Fish in here?

The Magic Fish was the best new comic I read in 2020. Absolutely gorgeous graphic novel.

  24. Oh whoops, The Magic Fish wasn't First Second. But yeah, excited for that, too.

Wish I had time to be more active here again. But a quick update on some stuff I've read recently:

    Absolutely adored Giant Days.

Reading through the Rebirth Nightwing run, which started out pretty good, but is now in a low spot for me. I'm somewhere around issue 54 at the moment, but I'm excited to eventually get to the Tom Taylor run because I've heard great things and I've been loving the covers for those issues.

Still reading through The Dark Tower. I'm finally on the last series which is The Drawing of the Three - The Sailor. And I am halfway through The Stand trades.

Otherwise, I have a lot on my shelf still that I hope to get to soon: Gideon Falls, Outcast, the Reckless books, and Dragon Hoops are likely up next, not necessarily in that order.
