The way I see it there are enough turn based games coming out from SE that I don't really necessarily miss it being turn based at all. But I get concerns about 1. it not being a traditional "you're on an adventure with a full controllable party" thing, and 2. the fact that the more action paced combat of FF games hasn't been particularly good action combat. But yeah I do think knowing what Yoshida has done, how well he pays attention and listens, and knowing that the main scenario writer is the Heavensward writer out of all of them cures a lot of those concerns about it feeling like a Final Fantasy and/or being what I want out of a Final Fantasy very fast.

But I hear you, there is a considerable amount coming from them which is nice.


There's a difference with Final Fantasy though, there's the fan service/lore that's included in every FF game which I love so much, but there is also so much dedication to detail and depth to FF games that it makes a turn-based game that much more rich and enjoyable.

Given the combat gameplay director for FFXVI I’m not worried about it all though. They learned their lesson and got a proven talent to work the battle system.

 

The Ys games are a great series of action-RPGs.

especially Ys VIII, that one is *chef’s kiss.*

 

right now I’m running joker, morgana, ryuji and Makoto and I’m sad I can’t use yusuke because he’s a good damage dealer but the synergy on this team rn is so good

Finished Control! Great stuff. Maze level was insane. Story came together pretty nicely.

The last couple of main story fights were too hard and too long (that's what she said?), so I had to use assist mode on non-side-mission for once, which is unfortunate but I guess that's what it's there for.

Earlier, I tried one of the expeditions (end-game content, I suppose), and it was also too hard. I guess if I were to continue playing it would be to find all the hidden areas and collectibles. This shit is so cool I don't think I'm ready to move on to another game just yet.

 

Makoto is crazy good her sp costs are super low and she’s pretty good at defense also I love her I can’t imagine switching her out

 

joker having the ability to use every style is top tier

ryuji being full power

Morgana only being a support/healer

makoto just being all around good

P4G may be a worse offender I can't recall the part I played but P5 ain't bad.

I also meant the sim part isn't that deep and intensive, it's pretty simple and can help with stat buffs. Idk, play the fuckin game man.

 

You should definitely play around with Yusuke in place of Ryuji and see how he fits as a physical attacker. His physical skills are way better than Ryuji’s by endgame.

yeah with today's news I really have no interest in FFXVI

the best rpgs for me care about character management, stats, and progression across multiple characters with battle systems that rely on party dynamics. I really have no interest in FFDMC. I totally get why it makes sense from a business standpoint and I'm sure it'll be a mechanically good game with a decent (at least) story, but if they're not even going to have a bare-minimum Tales-like or FF7 remake type system then I'm not bothering.
