The show owes him everything. If you look at him in the first episode and the last you very quickly see how portraying that lifestyle led to his poor health and death.

There is a short documentary about him on Netflix. It is very clear how beloved he was by everyone, which just makes it that more challenging it must have been for him to be a representation of selfishness and murder.

Listening to the latest The Wire 20th anniversary podcast and David Simon said he originally wanted to cast John C Reilly as Jimmy McNulty. I want to live in the alternate universe where that happened.

As time goes on I find McNulty to be one of the worst parts of the show. He is too much of a stock character from a million other cop shows. Season Four is better for making him a cameo.

But he’s one of the most crucial because he highlights the absurdity of the lone wolf maverick that is otherwise vindicated in any other cop show. Not only does he lose himself, but he doesn’t even bring about the change - small or large - that he works so hard for. In his mind he’s the one person who can fix/solve everything, but to so many other characters he’s just one little nuisance out of a million

Lieutenant Daniels is a much better version of that, as well as the people from each season who try to chart their own destiny (Sobotka, Haynes, D'Angelo)

I can't believe there are still 3D showings of new movies. Who is paying for this? They don't even pretend to shoot for 3D anymore.

Daniels is not the same because he’s a reformer who thinks that moving up the ranks will eventually put him in a position where he can make a huge difference in his capacity as an individual. McNulty starts from the assumption that the bureaucracy is a dead end and advances are only made in spite of the system.

But that is what makes McNulty less interesting than the other cases throughout the show. Whether it is Daniels trying to reform the department, Stringer trying to turn the drug business into a respectable one, or Sobotka trying to save the union, they are all ultimately crushed by the system. McNulty would be despised by his superiors even if the police department was competent. Who doesn't he screw over in the course of the show? He thinks because he verbally recognizes the flaws (assuming most others don't) he has moral justification for whatever he wants to do. It feels like a different show when we watch his antics.

Love that Meth gives much respect to the unsung hero of The Wire both onscreen and behind the scenes the late great Robert Chew

Beside being one of the best characters Chew was the behind the scenes acting coach for Snoop, Michael, Dukie, Randy, and Namond. He also was heavily involved in the Baltimore children's theater so a lot of those kids who had smaller speaking roles were his students. I give Chew a lot of credit for how great season 4 was.
