My favorite part is the comparison to the Weeknd song - that album came out in January and Harry had vinyls ready to launch in May which means his album was done way before the Weeknd's came out

There’s absolutely a fun way to discuss similarities and homages and inspiration but something like that with a smug looking dude that stays surface level and doesn’t draw any conclusions about the artist’s influences and why certain tropes are so powerful in music is such a disservice

It's a dumb video in a superficial uninteresting sense, but idk why you all are acting super antagonistic towards him as if he's shitting on the music or trying to act smugly superior or something, as if it's music cinemasins or whatever. He's just noting the similarities and nodding along

I mean I'm not here to defend the sanctity and honor of headbop tiktok guy lol. The video just came off as more innocuous than anything to me. Like that he just says similarities rather than, say, "ripoffs"

 

I was mostly indifferent until he started pointing towards long held out notes as some sort of striking similarity

 

he used to do some videos that were super huge reachs on similarities and they were pretty meh

 

If you think every held synth chord is similar to The Weekend, your musical vocabulary is way too small to deserve people’s attention.

Oh and if you list 3 songs it’s “similar” to, that probably indicates it’s just a basic vocal cadence and not a similarity. Jussayin’.

Not to bring this back up but if you look at the comments, 95% are saying he’s stealing. Just posting that video and not talking about what’s actually going on is doing everything a disservice. Give me a video breaking down where he’s wearing his influences on his sleeve and how he interprets them within the technology and such available in 2022 and then we can talk. Dude probably doesn’t have malicious intent but it’s part of a larger issue with how we’re digesting art right now

Never really listened to Harry’s music much but damn this album is good. Probably my favorite of the year so far. Between that and Dashboard.
