Part of the controversy with the most recent fight was that it just doesn't seem intuitive to a lot of the fighters. The misunderstanding of "effective grappling" is the example people like DC and Laura Sanko were addressing. To them, as former fighters, it seems intuitive that pressing someone on the cage, not letting them escape, and striking them dozens of times could be seen as effective grappling (since Vieira obviously did not want to be in that spot), yet the judges apparently did not score it that way and the criteria doesn't really mention anything related to that either (to their surprise).

I should have phrased my initial complaint better - I think the scoring criteria is probably fine for the most part, but the 10-9 system has to be revised in order for it to be applied more accurately. Close rounds where it's not even clear who won need to be weighed as such and shouldn't be scored as a blanket 10-9 just as a dominant/clear round would be.

The judging criteria isn't just there to determine who won the fight in the most accurate way, it also encourages a certain type of fight, think submission only bjj vs sport bjj. The current MMA rules heavily favour exciting, high damaging fights

To me this is a good and clear definition of effective grappling. It deliberately rewards the exciting grappling people like to watch ie; Charles and Khabib who are constantly looking to advance position to do damage or submit and doesn't reward holding and stalling with busy work shots.

The 10-9 system isn't perfect but again its designed to push the action in each round. if the striking and grappling is even, it goes to effective aggression and then to area control. In close rounds the system rewards the fighter to push aggressively for an advantage and nab the points. The idea being more lenient with 10-10 rounds would encourage fighters in close rounds to conserve energy for the following round.

The criteria sounds good in theory, but it's still not intuitive in a lot of instances which is the entire reason you are seeing a lot of debate about judging right now from former and current professional fighters as well as a bunch of pushback from fighters believing they there's a robbery on nearly every card. I understand the criteria of "Effective Grappling", but my point is that the fighters, commentators, media, etc. don't seem to agree that that's what it should mean - they aren't thinking of it in terms of "I need to be exciting in order to win".

You can try to make sense of the criteria and the 10-9 system and defend them, but I think the general inconsistencies in scoring and outrage from every facet of the MMA community after literally every card makes it pretty evident that there is some problem somewhere (whether it's the ignorance of everyone involved or if the criteria is really just not intuitive). It's not like there is a completely clear way to balance volume vs. power when you don't completely know how much a single shot actually affects a fighter. And I say this as someone who's judged dozens of amateur cards and taken professional judging seminars - it's not as easy to score as it should be.

    1) State commissions need to band together and create one, coherent, ruleset.
    2) Fighters, coaches and broadcasters need to attend (at least) yearly seminars explaining the rules.

That is just the nature of combat sports, it's always going to be subjective, there for there's going to be biases and people will always complain. Compared to the other combat sports MMA is the most complex and difficult to judge but I also think it has the best judging criteria. I'm sure it will be updated and changed in time and hopefully for the better but for now I haven't seen any better solutions and personally I would prefer other combat sports change their criteria to be more like MMA (please I pray for boxing every day).

Yeah, I just think MMA’s is probably a tad outdated and could use some refining. But to go along with what you said, MMA usually only has “robberies” when the fights are really close or there’s something about them that make them hard to score - unlike boxing where the scores are sometimes so puzzling that they look fixed lol.

  9. Lots of rumors that Khamzat will fight Leon for an interim belt.

  10. Not a shock really but seems that Islam/Charles is next for the belt.

Very happy the fight that should happen is actually happening instead of some hot shotting BS. Honestly the most excited I’ve been for a title fight in a really long time. Both guys are on fantastic runs and it’s a very technical stylistic matchup.

  12. Also according to Ariel

Yan/Chito is tentatively penciled in for a fight night main event sometime this fall. That’s a great fight

Are you referring to him elbowing a nurse in an attempt to steal a vaxx card that was filled out before he actually got the shot (and didn’t get in the end)? Yeah, I took a look at his Twitter this morning and his responses to people posting about it. He like, more or less finds both situations hilarious and is making jokes about being in jail for it or doing it again. Terrible human being I hope his career is over.

Speaking of terrible, Dillashaw really had the skull density to criticize Paddy in an interview where he talks about him probably having diabetes from bulking and cutting so much, how “terrible it is for your body” and that he’ll never be a champion. Buddy, you used to sell “fat Tyler” t-shirts on your merch store and once cut from walking around at 180 to 135 just to get steamrolled by Cejudo. You, for years, shot EPO into ur butt. This dude a potato brain.

Dillashaw is a loser. I’m not a huge Paddy guy, but his response was hysterical

I’m hopeful it happens. I kept going 50/50 into Oliveira’s last 4 and he not only won but finished em all in remarkable fashion. He’s done enough to prove he’s the best currently. Islam is a great challenge, and if Oliveira beats him I can stop reading all the casual comments about how he could never beat Khabib. If he takes out the dude who’s primarily using the exact same techniques and is his protege, what more is there to say?
