A kid at the school 10 minutes from me had an unloaded gun on campus this morning. Terrifying.

Can one of the teachers in here or other people who work in a school tell me if it is actually part of the Active Shooter Drills to teach the kids who sit near the doors to throw things and wave their hands around....? Please tell me that's not true.

Only if the shooter is in the classroom and we are still in the classroom, then yes. We throw chairs, desks, whatever. What else are we going to do if we are trapped? In Columbine, the shooter killed kids hiding under tables and such.

I had read a tweet that made it sound like they teach the kids near the doors to throw objects up in the air and wave their hands around to, in essence, draw fire and buy time for the other kids to escape.

I do, and it's probably naive, but mostly because the people I see and interact with on a daily basis are, by and large, good and trying to do good things.

That's unfortunately maybe not enough but fuck it's all I've got.

It depends on what kind of training the school has. I have heard that. Our first priority is exiting the building or hiding with the door locked, depending on where the shooter is.

What you are describing seems like the most logical solution to a completely fucked up scenario, the best of horrible options, and somewhat different than what the original tweet was portraying.

I work in a high school, our active shooter drills don't really drill for "surprise shooter shows up at your open door", instead we drill as if your classroom isn't the first target. In other words, we close the door, shut off the lights, and move the kids out of view of the classroom door windows. In our directions that we are told to read before hand, we do mention that the teacher (that's me!) will barricade the door if feasible, and that if someone does enter the room, do the ole run/hide/fight. Since run and hide are basically eliminated there, the fight option it is. We aren't told specifically what to tell them about run/hide/fight from what I remember, but I've told my students during the drills that if this ever happens, I want them to pick up any heavy textbook they see in my room and be prepared to throw them at anyone who comes busting through the door.

    You know....normal shit.

That’s how we did it at my school. Some of the classrooms had construction paper over the tiny window on the doors so you couldn’t look inside.

  22. He says they won't do a symbolic vote because "voters already know where Republicans stand."
Definitely not because they don't actually have all 50 Democrats on board for any existing gun legislation, not even HR 8.

Yeah I'm not mad at Chuck Schumer there, everything he said is factually correct. I do want the symbolic vote though just to once again put them on record yet again like they did with roe v wade. What else are you doing? it's not like any serious legislation is getting passed right now. Put together a bill based on past bills and schedule the vote.

  24. They don't even need to cobble anything together! There's legislation passed by the house that's just been sitting there collecting dust because no one will bring it to the floor.

Which makes sense strategically because they can't afford to be embarrassed by 5+ Democrats voting against something like universal background checks... but that really just makes it worse :\

The one that broke my heart was reading that teachers are told that if they hear a student pounding on the door begging to be let in because they were outside the classroom when the lockdown went into effect, they are to ignore the screams for help because it could be the killer themselves or the killer using a kid to get in. Saw someone reply to that on Twitter to say that when they were a kid they couldn’t take it anymore during a drill so they ran to the door to let the person into the room. When they opened the door the principal was standing there and he held up his hand like a gun, pointed at the kid’s forehead, and said “bang, you’re dead.”

    Hell country.
