I never got into Beautiful Things. I think there are some cool ideas throughout it and a lot of solid songs, but nothing about that album really stands out to me

Because of Don’t Dance I’ve been regularly coming back to my Anthony Green playlist that spans his entire body of work chronologically, and it made me remember how emotional I used to feel all the time, but also how much his music means to me overall. Good and bad. Anthony and his work has been vital connective tissue to me and my youth/musical interests from that time for as long as I can remember. As I have had him as an influence in my life from teen years until now (30), so many pieces of my youth fall to the back of my mind or are completely gone until moments of deja vu happen when I hear his music. Specific songs tied to specific memories, both good and bad. Happiness, heartbreak, isolation, perseverance. I’ve felt it all with this man’s music.

Especially considering the amount of artist I’ve cut ties with as a fan, Anthony is one shining pillar that hasn’t been torn down that I don’t know what I’d do without. Might be the only one left for me at this point too.

Also he doesn’t play any of the songs I really really love from his solo albums except for Dear Child, which is great but mostly nostalgic. I would love to see stuff like

    First Day of Work…
    The More You Get…
    100 Steps
    Conversation Piece
    East Coast Winters
    Will It Be
    From What I Understand

Feel like I’ve never seen any of the above on setlists outside of like, album release shows. :(

Just got back to Beautiful Things after a longer while - still love it! It's emotive and diverse, quirky and dark at times, lots of Good Old War tones as well.

its kinda all over the place, but in retrospect Beautiful Things is some of his best work by a wide margin I think

I like Avalon, Beautiful Things, and WYSBIL quite alot

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

    I adore Beautiful Things

Blood Song is still one of my favourites he's ever done

Even though every solo album has at least 5 tracks I really adore, Pixie Queen is the one I truly love front to back.

Anthony once did a really honest and vulnerable interview after its release about how most of its inspiration came from the desire to make an album expressing his love and admiration for his wife and what she means to him. He then talked about how he never expected or knew that you could put so much heart or effort into a project like that and have it fall completely flat on its intentions. :(

Even sadder to think about now in retrospect.

Can you link to this interview by any chance, if you remember it?

I will do some digging to find it because there was a big quote from it that I really loved from AG. Basically he just said it seemed like he made PQ for Meredith and it didn’t seem like she cared at all for the album.

    Cool I found it.

    One moment, please...

His life, including things otherwise left unsaid, has been the source and motivation for his songwriting for nearly two decades. 2016’s Pixie Queen, Green’s previous solo album, was described in a 2018 Substreaminterview as having been written as a message to his wife. When asked if the new album follows suit, Green pauses his exercise just long enough to answer.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say I’m trying to send her a message, necessarily, this time. I feel like I was trying to get her attention with Pixie Queen and then when I sort of didn’t, I was like, in that place where I’m the person who didn’t get the attention they wanted. So then I wrote that record. That’s what Would You Still Be In Love is. Would you still be in love if you spent ten years writing records for somebody it maybe doesn’t resonate with? That maybe doesn’t give a shit?

On the flip side, are you still going to be in love with somebody who you spend over ten years with who all they do is write a bunch of records for you but don’t clean the fucking house the way you wanted them to or they don’t do the thing you wanted them to do? I think that overkill, trying to make this thing that was trying to save my marriage, ended up producing Would You Still Be In Love because I was maybe in a position where you go 50/50 with somebody, I maybe went 70 and then had some resentment about it.”

I also really loved this portion of it from AG that resonated with me.

“It’s funny to think about how long you can hold on to that image of being that guy,” he says with a hint of nostalgia in his voice. “It’s comforting to think of ourselves in this individuality, in this individual sense of the word. Like, okay, if you find yourself on this road, then that’s where you are. That’s not where you are. That’s where your sense of self that you have manifested is grounded. So it’s easier for you to find it there, but this thing that we think we are is an illusion. This thing that you think you are, this person that I think I am so that I can function in this society is not real. And it’s malleable; it’s paper thin. Everything I love and hate is a decision that I’ve made to live in the world, but if I needed to, I could deal with the nights cold even though I’m a summer guy.

He continues, “If I needed to, I could get comfy with eating anything every day. I could adapt. We are so adaptable. Our personalities, our minds. If there was the most beautiful woman you’d ever met in your entire life and she seduced you and brought you away, I guarantee you she could start getting you to love science fiction, or she could get you to start loving the color purple and all you wear is purple now because Sophia got you to love it. And we allow that to happen all the time except for certain moments when we hold on so tight. If we learned how to always be like that, like a little kid going along with it, we would be happier. And in a true sense of the word, not in an unbalanced sense where someone else needs to be sad. We would see the yin and the yang of things and be okay with life going at its own pace.”

LS Dunes announced for Corona Capital. It seems unusual for a band to have this much clout without the project being announced right?

Ya I think Frank is definitely involved - he was one of the few people following the account or something like that I can't remember. But now that both of their shows are on the same day as My Chemical Romance at their respective fests, it's basically guaranteed.
