Just a PSA that Covid is still very much a thing and it really sucks when you finally get it.

 

Slight rant.

I hate our timeline. My mom is an extremely open, caring, and liberal person but she also hasn't yet grasped the shitty "can't trust anything you read" world we're currently living in and can be very naive about it, so this morning when she wants to show me a "funny headline" and I cringe because I see it's an article by the Libs Of Tiktok, and then we have to have a depressing and uncomfortable conversation about who they are, why they're terrible, and why my mom should never read anything they say ever again, and it's like, my mom is 74; she doesn't want to have to think about this kind of shit. She just wants to read the news and have it actually be legitimate real news she can talk about, and not worry about if it's fake or skewed or whatever.

Fucking fuck. Fuck.

 

My parents are 71 and 70 and roughly the same. I was terrified the whole first 18 months of the pandemic my parents would fall into some Fox News hole but then my dad said he was really into the young turks lol. But to have to explain why certain outlets suck is exhausting. It also reinforces that boomers as a whole sucks but to be in your 70's navigating a Very Online World is near impossible. I mean, I'm so far out of the loop at 36, I can't fathom the internet in my 70's.

 

God. Yes to all of this. I’ve lately been noticing my Boomer parents/friends of parents sharing a “documentary” called “2,000 Mules” which is about the supposed “video evidence” of Liberals stuffing ballot boxes during the 2020 election. The comments section was filled with back and forths between them talking about how the vote tabulation process was fraudulent because they had gone downtown to film videos of “suspicious behavior” and then the windows were boarded up with cardboard preventing them from seeing anything further.

And it’s like, yeah, because you have no idea how the process actually works and these are just regular citizens like you and I offering up their services and you nutjobs are out here threatening their lives and they’re scared of you.

This is hell.

 

I've noticed a little bit of brain worms seep into my mom here and there because her boyfriend is a hardcore righty and she's on social media a lot. She used to be staunchly Dem union member, now she's kind of a "both sides are terrible" type that still votes Dem as far as I know. She doesn't buy into the crazy right wing batty shit, but def gets a little "nativist" and also gets mad at "moochers" aka people on welfare.

We did have a huge blowup like 6-7 years ago about racism and how some of the shit she says is racist and etc. She couldn't wrap her head around racism being something besides hating people of color for their skin color.

 

Somehow my mom is vaccinated but doesn't believe in the booster?????

 

Man, my parents do not follow politics or like, culture in general. I did have an aunt that posted Q stuff for awhile, and another aunt that used to be a cop. I don't really talk to them anymore!

 

People somehow think getting the booster will be "too much vaccine" and somehow make it harmful. Absolutely wild.

 

The wild thing about older family members succumbing to misinformation is that it seems to impact people regardless of their prior political consciousness or understanding of misinfo/online bullshit. I don't know what it is exactly, but at this point it's even heavily affected some of the people who taught me how to refine my own ability to suss out BS.

 

The thing is, my parents are on Facebook ALL THE TIME. All they see or at least share are motorcycle memes (they're members of a Christian rider's group), dog memes, or videos of like Merle Haggard performing. Somehow they've avoided the brain worms. The only political things I ever remember my dad saying are "man that guy's an idiot" in regards to Trump and telling me that I should vote for Obama in 2012.

 

That's precious, and I would guess that it's at least partially by choice/effort on their part.

I've always had a hard time with it, but I've slowly developed some appreciation for anyone older than GenX who's doesn't actively express a few fucked up ideas on important topics.
