Life-saving vaccines or the equivalent of half of Russia's entire defense budget of wepons to extend a proxy war for years? Very tough decision, I know

Sounds like Trump was obsessed with the 1998 Avengers film, just like myself.

I would love to see a policy that if a building in a vulnerable area gets destroyed by flooding, that property can no longer be developed. But I know that will never happen.

The coastal communities here in NJ that had many houses completely destroyed by hurricane sandy have essentially all been rebuilt and I hate seeing it knowing that it's just a matter of when they are destroyed again. (funny enough my job with the state is basically reviewing applications and issuing permits for projects in flood hazard areas so some of those rich people can thank me for letting them build there). But they are going to keep doing it as long as they can, and the NFIP continues to be in part a subsidy for the very wealthy. Imagine if the NFIP actually operated in a way to discourage development in flood prone areas

New Jersey has a program called Blue Acres where people who have homes damaged by floods or prone to flooding can sell them to the state at market value and the state turns the property into open space. I'd hope it eventually becomes a mandatory buyout program for some areas but I don't think that'll ever happen and I'm sure would be challenged in court.

sorry to loop you into my little rant

My area's newspaper just won the Pulitzer Prize for Investigative Journalism for a series they did exposing the many health and safety violations of Florida's only car battery recycling plant and the tragic effects of lead poisoning it caused to their employees over the decades

Tampa Bay Times is the only news source i pay a sub to, and i'm occasionally tempted to switch to the NYT, but then they keep winning Pulitzers for local stuff almost every year. This is their 2nd one in a row.

It never feels good to agree with Greenwald, but…yeah, I agree with this. $40 billion is an insane amount. The war pimps keep pimping.

From what I can tell, the US government sees a once in a generation chance to set Russia back decades, in all aspects, with the war effort the main driver of that, so are happy to purchase billions from US weapons manufacturers to send over to Ukraine to ensure that it happens.
