Never watched a Woodley title fight?

 

I'm torn because Coner doesn't deserve a title shot at all, but I want Charles to get his bag.

 

It’s truly amazing how good Charles has gotten to using clinchwork as incredibly as he does. He’s lanky so he knows his power is much more effective with the gap closed, and it makes him vulnerable, but he’s willing to eat shots (and apparently can better than it looks) to land heavy himself with a hand behind the neck. Justin looked shell shocked a few times by some of his blows, something I feel like I haven’t seen happen since Alvarez fought him.

 

Charles is such a badass fighter in every way. It’s almost poetic that this is the lightweight king we get after the invulnerable Khabib. His offensive striking is like a constant buzzsaw of sharp strikes, his only defense is to put himself into a woodchipper and survive, and then he’s lethal when it hits the ground. Plus he’s got swag and seems like a genuinely good dude.

His lanky power is something too…I mean we’ve seen Justin get cracked by some of the hardest punchers in the division and wobble around drunk but not fall. Charles absolutely floored him with that punch.

 

Islam/Charles will be fascinating.

 

Also, of all the people that I’ve seen Rose fight and truly take it to without being cautious, I never thought Carla was the one that would have her sitting like a deer in headlights. Bizarre fight. I’m truly surprised Carla didn’t just bombard her with shots and then take the legs because Rose wasn’t doing anything but counter jabs. Could not care less to see them run it back.

So I wasn't able to watch since it was Mother's Day here yesterday but it seems like this fight is comparable to Woodley v Maia.

I just looked up the stats from that fight and Woodley had 57 sig strikes compared to Maia's 95 and Maia was 0 for 21 takedowns and Woodley won.

In this fight, Rose has 37 sig strikes to Carla's 30 and Carla was 2 for 11 takedowns and Carla won.

Kinda interesting.

 

I had to watch that fight just to hear the commentary. They were just brutal haha. I love when Joe was like “good luck to the people in the truck trying to find highlights…”

Also, Rose throwing her arms up saying “fuck yeah” as soon as the fight ended as the crowd was booing the hell out of them was so damn cringe-worthy.

 

I didn't like her 'I don't see how you become the champion like that' quote.

 

Yeah, Rose saying “I’m the best” over and over before the fight and then cheering at the end of as beyond bizarre. Easily the most delusional corner and fighter I’ve ever seen in such a big fight.

 

I browsed the Reddit discussion thread for that fight, and a lot of people had pointed out that it seems like Rose has major confidence issues and almost like her corner needs to coddle her a little bit. Which sort of aligns with how they were speaking to her between rounds and how they were maybe a little bit hesitant to discourage her in any way. I don't know, but I don't feel like Trevor Wittman is that passive with his other fighters, especially when they are pissing away round after round.

That said, I still really don't understand how she felt confident that she was winning/won that fight with that 11 total strikes thrown.
