  9. Democrats push to codify Roe after leaked opinion. But they don’t have the votes.
The Women's Health Protection Act passed the House by a vote of 218-211, with every Democrat except Rep. Henry Cuellar of Texas voting in favor, and Republicans unanimously voting against it.

It has 48 co-sponsors in the Senate, facing opposition from Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, both of whom describe themselves as pro-life. Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska say they favor abortion rights but do not support the Women's Health Protection Act.

Senate Republicans have also led a filibuster of the bill. It was blocked from being debated in February by a vote of 46-48, with six senators missing the vote.

Eh to be honest them "trying something" that amounts to little more than political theater is kind of pointless at this stage and will only serve to allow people like Schumer to be able to pat themselves on the back and say "well we tried" when it fails. There are actualy concrete ways to try getting things done on abolishing the filibuster (like leaning on Manchin by threatening to throw his daughter in jail) but Biden would never do that so here we are. I don't want the Dems to have the easy out of taking a vote we all know they will lose and then going back to doing nothing for the next seven months until McConnell is back in charge and they can safely return to playing the token resistance.

  16. What would the steps be to getting rid of the filibuster?

Threaten Manchin, he becomes a Republican in actual name instead of just policy, is protected by the new majority, and you still don't have Sinema and probably one or two others. I don't see the path.

I....don't really think that's a viable option lol

lol We watched Donald Trump take over the entire Republican party in no time at all using threats and intimidation, it's a viable option. And as for him switching parties if it doesn't work, then we're in the same position we're about to be in a few months from now anyway. So what's the harm in trying. Same goes for Sinema btw.

  19. ... actually losing the majority months before the election would be the harm.

You're right, having a bullshit vote and then going back to doing nothing for seven months until the new GOP Congress takes over is a way better call

Among all the other flaws in the anti choice argument, I feel like some legit think the adoption process is all roses. Why can't the woman just put her body thru all the trauma and put it up for adoption? Like the system doesn't suck. Like there won't be attempted abortions thru drugs and alcohol that lead to other neurological and cognitive issues in the kids which leads to behaviors and attachment issues that make the kids "undesirable" to those looking to adopt. Sometimes these things don't come out until later in life and the adoption "fails" because the parents can't deal and weren't prepped and people are allowed to send kids back into the system who now have more trauma and attachment issues than ever and then they struggle to maintain in new homes. And the cycle continues and is almost impossible to break. And that's just one type of scenario among many that happens. Adoption is a super positive thing for many kids, but for others that trauma lives in their DNA.

Like even WITH abortion access I've known parents who have attempted to abort on their own and it's not swell. I wish these people had to live like even one day in the lives of these kids and parents because they couldnt handle it.

  23. Hence me asking what's an actual viable plan to remove the filibuster, pass a law, and expand the courts. I don't think a "bullshit vote" (which to some degree getting people on record is good) or "pretending we can force Manchin to kill the filibuster" are good answers.

There is no "viable plan to remove the filibuster". It won't happen. Trying to force Manchin and Sinema to get in line somehow is the last option to try, and it's not a great option.

Also, what good is getting Joe Manchin and Kirsten Sinema on record going to do here? What good is getting any of these people on record going to do? We already know where they all stand. Even Collins and Murkowski, who claim to be pro-choice, would vote against the bill and come up with some equivocating reason why they did it. It literally doesn't matter. It's purely an exercise in making Schumer et al. feel better about themselves. It just gives them an excuse to throw up their hands and say "Oh well!"

The only realistic, actionable move I see at this juncture is expanding the court.
