International Superhits might be my favorite Greatest Hits album of all time. Its up there with Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Greatest Hits album.

Real question. Do you guys hate FOAM because it’s a Green Day album or because you actually hate it?

 

The lyrics are horrendously bad. I just can’t with that album.

I don't hate FOAM nearly as much as others, but it's just simply an OK album of OK songs. AND THEN when you compare it to the rest of the band's catalog, it simply does not match up to the majority of it

There are a couple tracks that I find alright. Other than that it's just a huge letdown and super cringe. Butch Walker being attached to it had me super excited about it at first, but that went out the window real quick.

It's like the band bordered the line of either going all in with the "this is F'n rock'n'roll! F it all!" if people liked it or the whole "nah, we're just playing and its a major F you to the major label" if people didn't like it.

Regardless, its never a good thing when people think it was a joke and think the band has a "real" album waiting to be released lol.

 

That’s a big old nope. Lyrics are a vital part of what makes me like a band/album. There are always exceptions and there’s movie/tv score and such, but the vast majority of what I jam is going to have well written lyrics, generally relatable in some way (like Insomniac has tons of drug stuff but I relate to the feelings that are apart of the songs despite never having even smoked weed), or interesting lyrics in some way.

 

To me, lyrics are the very last thing I pay attention to in a song. This album and 60s doo wop share the corny/simple lyric thing, for sure. So I can definitely see why someone like you might not hate that kind of stuff since it's all very surface level and not something you can sit around and find the metaphors and deeper meaning to. I can definitely respect that even though I'm completely the opposite, haha. I don't even know all the lyrics to some of my favorite bands' songs.

 

They're just badly written and badly performed songs.

 

If FOAM had been a Foxboro Hot Tubs album, I think Green Day fans would have appreciated it a lot more.

 

For better or for worse, I don’t actually think the lyrics on FOAM are any worse than other Green Day albums lol

 

You’re certainly not alone in focusing on music over lyrics. I feel like that’s the majority of people. But for me, when a new album comes out, my first listen is with headphones and liner notes or a lyrics site pulled up to follow along with the album. If the lyrics don’t pull me in, it doesn’t mean I automatically hate it, but without that it’s unlikely I’ll ever revisit or jam the album outside of a full discography run through of a band.

for what it’s worth, I like I Was A Teenage Teenager ironically because it’s so bad and often pointed out as the worst on the album if not worst of the band.

 

"teenager" is one of the 3 songs from the album that i don't like haha. but yeah, there's only 3 songs i don't like. i also follow along with lyrics when i'm listening to it on CD or vinyl for the first time. but 9 times out of 10, the lyrics don't necessarily stick out to me all that much. i'm mostly listening to the music, the vibe, the melodies, the tone of the voice, etc. basically everything else but the actual words, haha. and even if i listen to a song and i hate the lyrics, if the vocal melody is catchy enough, or there's a cool riff or something, i'll revisit the song, for sure.

 

I'm following a Green Day thread, I would love to love a Green Day album. That was unfortunately not it lol. Maybe it's an OK album for a lesser band but yeah, it's an absolute bomb compared to their top tier.

 

Disagree, it's also doesn't even sound like Foxboro, so that hypothetical doesn't work in any way for me.

 

My recent discography run really just makes me miss the way BJA would effortlessly roll his vocal melodies off simple power chord progressions.

 

I’ve never really ever even tried listening to Foxboro. I think the only things I know about them is that they once played a “cover” of Fuck Time 8 times in a row and I’ve seen many people say Dos could have been FBHT. But I don’t know how accurate the second part is.

 

Ehh, I wouldn't say its accurate either. Maybe slight elements of some songs on Dos are similar, but not presented as the way it was.

Foxboro is pretty fun, it's very throwback rock in a way that Green Day never has been

 

I dunnooooo... "stop drop and roll" and a few others sounds like a FOAM type song to me. FOAM might be a little more 60s while Foxboro is a little more 70s, maybe. but either way, they're both throwback pop rock albums.

 

"Stab You in the Heart" would have been a top tier early Beatles song.
