Think this solidified Eggers as one of my top-three or so modern filmmakers. Just incredible shit. So happy he was able to make this (relatively) big budget epic and still keep it very much his brand of weird.

I don’t think this is what you’re referring to, but something similar happens on The Office. Michael goes to New York and thinks he sees Tina Fey and runs up to her. It’s not Tina. Meanwhile the camera catches Conan walking by and Michael completely missed him.

    Thought this was pretty good.

the end fight made me think of Mustafar and the battle there and I think it should have been more like this movie. Instead of like 30 minutes of fast choreography and multiple locations, just nude them up on a volcano and have a quick brutal fight.

also, I realized like halfway through that the first, I guess, raid was all one shot. Nicely done. Noticed quite a few lo my shots and it’s nice compared to movies that cut cut cut so much.

I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like I know nobody’s name. Anya is Olga. I have no idea what Ethan, Nicole, or Alexander’s names were. They weren’t said a lot and I didn’t really understand them when they were said. Doesn’t effect my enjoyment of the movie though.

I guess I don’t have a ton of thoughts about it. It was really solid all around.

Pretty incredible stuff. So happy this was somehow snuck through the studio system

    Hel yeah!

After reading many tweets about how hard this movie just goes for it…. I was still surprised by HOW HARD this thing goes! Really impressive how all 3 of Eggers films are so radically different, while still feeling like they were made by the same person.

I know I’ll be in the minority on this, but it didn’t connect with me. Love the performances, direction, cinematography and that an original movie like this got made. But the script and pacing felt cold to me.

Like, I never felt I got a firm grasp on any of the characters and with it, at least up until the big Nicole Kidman scene, being kind of a typical revenge story, I felt like I was wondering why I should care about anything that’s going on. I still love Eggers and will see whatever he does. But this was a disappointing miss.

Relentless movie. It put lots of hair on my chest. Although I will say that I have never seen such bad posture. My man is consistently hunched.

The one-shot sequence when they invade the village was a ripper. I just wish they hadn't put so much of that into the trailers. I wish I could've experienced it fully unaware of what was coming. Still just absolutely awesome though. Some breathtaking grandiose shots too, especially in Iceland.

One of those movies where I had to pee and thought I could find a dull moment to do so, but like every scene was good

  17. This whipped ass. Love to see a movie this brutal get a wide release. I'm not loving Ethan Hawke in Moon Knight, so I'm glad he's great in this. Was a nice surprise to see Ralph Ineson make a cameo too.

This film fucking slaps! Eggers is a fantastic director. I just love the world building he does, and while these 3 films he’s done all happen in different time periods, they all feel systematically connected.

I love the motif of light through The Witch, The Lighthouse and the Northman.

    just so so good.

Still need to see The Lighthouse but this was great, yeah it follows a well-worn revenge plot that in itself had little in the way of surprises but what is added to it ultimately makes up for that. Definitely is a film that needs to be watched at the cinema for the sound and cinematography alone.

I thought this was pretty good. Pretty handily my least favorite of his three films. It’s definitely the most conventional of the bunch. I have some thoughts but don’t want to spoil too much yet so people have time to see it. It’s in the good, not great camp for me.pretty gnarly though.

It felt as if the movie teetered between ice cold revenge story and growing a heart and it honestly bothered me for most of the runtime. It felt like the first 20 mins were rushed and edited in a way that maybe confirmed some of the studio meddling suspicions, the middle third drags, though I enjoyed the subversion of the uncle now being a sheep farmer rather than a king. I guessed the Kidman twist right away, so some of that was sapped for me but the scene was still wonderful and she was fantastic throughout. It’s conventional in a way that his last two aren’t, and I think I was hoping for something a little less traditional. Even with the plot subversions it still follows a pretty straightforward path towards its final conclusion, which makes it feel a little telegraphed. It looks stunning though, and the action is top tier.
