I definitely feel like NCTH was at least partly meant to sound less "slick" than Greatest Generation, on the grounds that it fits with the theme of the album being "honest" rather than the "ironic sheen" of TGG. Hence Dan recording the title track while lying on the ground, etc.

Listeners are of course free to decide for themselves whether this was a wise thing to do for an entire album.

Song rips. Mix is still kinda weird, not nearly as crisp as the old shit.

  3. re: NCTH - do I think Slow Dancing With San Andreas should have been on the album proper? yes I do, but fuck knows what I'd cut for it

If I had to pick something from the album to make into a released b-side and replace with that song, it’d probably be Thanks For The Ride for me

  5. probably my pick but that song fucking WHIPS live so it's more difficult still lol, how are they this good

I couldn’t figure out why Grand Theft Autumn was stuck in my head all day and I just realized it’s because of the riff in this song lol

Thanks for the Ride is an absolute boring wet blanket of a song. Should’ve been thrown right into the trash can.

did I see Ernest Hemingway hate in here earlier, that's wild. bridge of that song kicking in is one of the greatest moments in their discog

Also just saying, last time The Wonder Years started an album cycle, Philadelphia won a championship not long after ;)

    That song is phenomenal.

That might be one of the reasons NCTH disappoints me actually. There are about 7-8 incredible songs on there (I mean come on, Bluest Things on Earth is top tier material, Cardinal's lyrics are like a modern Hemingway, I could go on) and then the rest kinda just putter around and I'm left wishing they were all as good as those 7 or 8.

I honestly, genuinely love everything on that album. my only complaint is the alternate Palm Reader >>> the original

I love every song on NCTH and think the album is fantastic but its the album I rank the lowest (Not counting GSOI which is clearly bottom)

Idk if I need to listen to NCTH again. Few songs are good, and it's absolutely a step up from the writing on TGG but not much else is doing it for me.

Sister Cities is pretty easily their best album
