Very bad episode last night, but in a fun way lol

looks like they’re throwing the kitchen sink at Jodie’s final episode.

Episode was okay. Either way I'm just glad Chibnall is almost out the door.

I never knew that Matt Smith was in the Crown until, well... until I realized it - lol.

Now I want to go back to the older Dr. Who shows....

Episode was a drag. I really liked the idea of it, especially coming off Our Flag Means Death, but this just didn't do anything for me. I don't even understand why it exists in the context of a special.

I truly had no idea a new episode was coming out. Will watch tonight though. Is it just one more after this?

    I hope think so.

I thought it was a trio of specials? Maybe that included the one in the Sheffield storage facility.

As for this one, I don't think it did much as a special at all. Wasn't a very interesting premise, was all sewn up very quickly and there were only a couple of very faint plot points which they might do something more with later.

What got top me most was that the overall quality of it just seemed low. The acting/direction on certain people was just outright terrible. The son looking for revenge (can't remember his name) was absolutely shocking all the way through. The scene early on in the village also felt really cheap and bordering on like a weekday kids show level. It just looked tacky, empty and poor (none of which it was going for).

But the visual effects throughout were trash. I know with Dr Who it's part of the charm that monsters and action are done in a kind of throwback or even silly way, but this one felt a step too far. The sea monsters looked ridiculous and the outer shots of their ship would have been better never seen. Just dreadful all round.

Rumor is this episode had a lot of problems dealt with in post and was chopped up pretty significantly to make it work, and it really shows.

I just wish we were getting at least one more series with Jodie under RTD's direction now that he's back. She deserved so much better than the mess of an era Chibnall gave us.

man. this episode suuucked. felt honestly bad for Jodie and Mandip doing their goddamn best to land some aspects of this ridiculously forced romance beat that was abruptly introduced in their third to last episode after no buildup whatsoever for three scenes. almost everything else about it apart from that final scene was atrocious

just ready for this era to be fucking over lmao

It's SUCH a poorly written, clumsily handled plot point lol. It would've been fine if there was ANY build-up to it early on but they just crowbarred it into that one story and then ran with it.

This whole era is just one of massively wasted potential. Jodie is a good doctor, great at times, but the stories have been mostly bland to downright bad. Graham was a solid companion, as is Dan and (mostly) Yaz. Ryan did nothing and woodenly mumbled his way through every line he delivered. The new Master is played well but ultimately feels like a complete story regression after the Missy arc. The timeless child element is irritating and poorly written, and will probably resolve in some epically hamfisted fashion, if it isn't just abandoned entirely.

Oh, and the flux has still ravaged most of the universe and we've ignored it completely since that saga ended lol. I was sure they'd just quickly and lazily fix it all in Jodie's final episode but now I'm not sure they'll do even that.

re Flux, there was some BTS special where Chibnall said the universe got restored and The Doctor undid all the damage from the Flux event. he just like... neglected to write that scene and put it in the season, I guess?

its wild how often the scripts this era are just lacking basic competence and quality control lmao

lol what the fuck. good lord. I hope they actually address that in a future episode (so, the finale I guess) because to just leave it hanging and only ever resolve it via word of god is lazy even by Chibnall standards.

Very excited for this. This is a much more inspired choice than some of the other rumors were suggesting (I'm looking at you Tennant). Love him in Sex Education. Definitely recommend checking it out if you haven't seen it.

Inspired casting. I feel like I’m already reading a ton of people saying this is going to get them to watch the show for the first time, including my wife lol

I’m not familiar with him, but the excitement I’m seeing from others who are is awesome. Hopefully this brings in a new resurgence of positivity to the show and the fandom!

I'm really interested to see how this pans out. He's great in Sex Education and I could imagine him being an awesome doctor.

What worries me is that he gets the same sort of slop which was served to Whittaker. The whole northern focused, Sheffield doctor thing was hopeless from the start. Maybe that was the Yorkshire in me feeling pandered to, but it really rubbed me up the wrong way throughout.

Fingers crossed they give Gatwa a good foundation and let him put his spin on it, rather than trying to fuse Doctor Who with Attack the Block or something equally cringe-worthy.

  25. awakeohsleeper

    I do not exist.

I loved the Sheffield thing in the first season - living here it was great to see some locations we go to etc. (I’m not actually a Yorkshireman though so can’t comment on feeling pandered to). I was actually disappointed they phased that out in Season 2 and then went for Liverpool for the Flux to Bishop.

The thing with the slop is that it was a writing issue in my eyes. I’m hoping RTD will be a step up in quality. He better be as I don’t think I can stomach any more of this low quality writing.
