I always considered RHCP as "rock music for people who don't actually like rock music." Whereas Brand New was music for people with artsy, exquisite tastes. That's pretty much the main difference.

Jesse's misconduct was a Good Charlotte, Simple Plan-tier move. You expect those bands to have pervy frontmen, not Brand New, who cited My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth as influences and did everything they could musically to distance themselves from pop punk. But in the end, it's easy to forget that in 2002, Brand New were seen as disposable as Good Charlotte or Simple Plan. (I hate Your Favorite Weapon — not as much as those 2 bands but it's a bad album). And their origins in making immature music came back to haunt them when it turned out Jesse committed the ultimate lowbrow pop punk move.

That's why Jesse hurt more. Because by all accounts, he *should* have been above it all based on everything else he did.

 

Re: Kiedis, everyone cites the Catholic schoolgirl 14-year old incident, but RHCP's rap sheet of sex offenses is far worse than just that and extends beyond Kiedis. It has its own Wikipedia section. They have criminal charges for this shit, it's not even "alleged", it's proven by law.

In 1990, Anthony Kiedis was convicted of sexual battery and indecent exposure after a concert at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, on April 21, 1989. Kiedis exposed himself and pressed his penis to a woman’s face against her wishes.[252][253]

Also in 1990, Flea and Chad Smith were arrested on charges of battery in Daytona Beach, Florida, at a performance for MTV during spring break, with Flea also charged with disorderly conduct and solicitation to commit an unnatural and lascivious act. Flea picked up a 20-year-old woman and threw her into the sand, while Smith forcibly removed her bathing suit and slapped her buttocks.[254] Flea demanded that she perform oral sex on him before both he and Smith were escorted off the premises by security.[255] The arrests led to the State University of New York at New Paltz banning the band from performing a free scheduled concert.[256]

In Kiedis's autobiography Scar Tissue, he admitted to raping a 14-year-old fan who was the daughter of a Louisiana police chief despite her telling Kiedis she was underage. He wrote the song "Catholic School Girls Rule" about the incident.[252] In 1986, Kiedis dated the 16-year old Ione Skye, daughter of Donovan, despite her being below the age of consent in California.[257]

In 2016, former music executive Julie Farman penned an essay in which she discussed being sexually harassed by two members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1991.[258][259][255]

last post from me because I don't even like this band but anyway: fuck Anthony Kiedis who 'loves being offended' but hung up on an interviewer when she brought up his admission to statutory rape. oh, and apparently he's done a bunch of other disgusting shit too but he's a statutory rapist and needs to get in the fucking sea.

 

The only thing I have to add is the way people talk about Brand New, even now, like they were some god tier holy band that was ~different~ than other bands, is weird. I understand a lot of people had deep passion towards them and their music, but it's very strange how they are talked about on here. Like, saying you expect some bands to have "pervy frontmen" but not Brand New is just...weird. No band should be above others in terms of whether you think they can be creepy. Obviously you want to assume the bands you look up to are good people but placing bands in tiers based on how likely they are creeps is one of the reasons why the discourse surrounding Brand New is so strange.

 

Shrek voice on Black Summer being done in tribute to Cate Le Bon is objectively one of the funniest things i’ve ever heard. Props given where they’re deserved, Kiedis is a comedy genius

yeah there were a lot. that’s still … a lot moved haha. it’s easy to forget though that none of the frusciante albums are really in any of the different eras of vinyl popularity
