I had no idea that Memory Music was Will Yip’s label or that he produced this. I’ve felt hit or miss on his work before but this record sounds so beautiful that I understand why other artists flock to him!

“Useful Machine” is the one today. That’s where the Copeland and Lydia influence comes through with that gorgeous piano and extremely tight songwriting. Just so many layers in this one. love the electronic leaning drum sounds, and god damn that bass whoever pointed out the rhythm section on this album earlier (I know someone did) was not kidding and I think that’s really what makes the more subdued vibe really work, lots of bands tend to put their rhythm sections, especially bassists, in the background. Thankfully this band is, you know, actually good, and their bassist and drummer know what the fuck they’re doing and effortlessly pull the entire song together with their playing. but yeah once this song hits its stride it’s game over man, you just don’t hear bands as good as this one making music that sounds like this anymore, and maybe that sound boomerish and out of touch but not a single record in the smaller emo scene from the last few years has done anything for me besides what we’ve gotten from oso oso and foxing. maybe I’m forgetting some stuff but I really think this band is on a different level.

it reminds me of his work with circa survive which I very much enjoy especially the amulet (my fav circa jawn) and the EP’s

The rhythm section here really makes the more subdued directions really work here. Incredible work. Similar in impact and importance as Dan Tracey on Infinite Granite

I just saw them live a few weeks ago, that man is so good at drums it is unfair. It’s like running a marathon at full speed when you realize he’s up there for about an hour fifteen going so fucking hard for 85% of the time I literally can’t even comprehend how he’s got the endurance and stamina to just get through it let alone play so close to perfect you could use his takes for an album version, I mean my god

Same, it was incredible and such a visceral, out of body experience

This was a very nice listen on the way to work this morning. Really sucks that Pitchfork review is so dismissive despite the good score but hey that's what they do when you make rock music that isn't derivative, warbly mumblecore

the shift at the end and the droning noise in the background is so Copeland

That's strange, seeing as the production really resembles Will's work with Pianos Become The Teeth, Circa Survive or mewithoutYou and I think plenty other of his records, or at least in small bits (taken from Balance and Composure or even newer ones like Bartees Strange). A very higly skilled and capable producer to my ears, glad they've used him for Caracara too.

Yeah, it sounds a lot like Will Yips other stuff to me. I have mostly really liked Will Yips’ production. My only qualms are that I wish the vocals were more forward in the mix on La Dispute’s Panorama and mewithoutYou’s [Untitled]

Eh if you look at the writers twitter feed he does genuinely like the album a lot I think it was just a weird write up that could be seen as back handed since the comparisons drawn aren’t typically seen in a positive light

I didn’t get the impression that the writer didn’t like it. I just wish they and others would spend less time talking about genres and comparisons and spend more time actually talking about the music

My wife went to high school with the bass player, said he was always very talented and played in all the school bands haha. Apparently he’s a very nice guy too.

It has been mentioned by me, and I am happy to see someone else make the same connection. Songs like Ohio especially give me those vibes - teetering on that fine line between emo and post-rock, with drums that take my breath away. The last couple minutes of "Dry Spells" off Wait For Love are the best comparison.
