i dont know how more people dont get dismayed by climate change stuff on like a mass level throughout all of society. because lets be real, im extremely privileged. a lot of terrible shit that happens, yeah, is terrible, but at the end of the day my day to day life is relatively left unscathed by the ongoing social injustices plaguing america. even the ongoing conflict in ukraine feels far enough removed from my day to day that its not awakening doomsday vibes within me. but thinking about 2045 as the big cut off date (i think i saw one of those threads name that year specifically) for an apocalyptic future....thats right around the corner. thats less time than ive already been alive. and it doesnt matter who you are or where you come from that shits going to impact every facet of your life top to bottom when it starts to hit. and tbh the ramp up to that 2045 isnt going to be easy either. its already causing issues all over the place and its just gonna get worse and worse and worse until our species is doomed on a level that makes the talks of nuclear warfare seem like child's play.

  4. mmm I feel you, but that’s also the problem. He notes the asymmetry and says the solution is for the US to kowtow even harder, implying the country has no soft power other than to be a sub sugar daddy lol

I still stand by my theory that, at least as far as Americans are concerned, the use of Celsius vs. Fahrenheit makes the problem seem less urgent than it is because Americans hear 3-4 degree difference celsius and have no idea that that means like 10 degrees warmer in F.

Farenheit makes no sense, I'm sorry. It's the weirdest measurement you guys have.

  12. IMO: I think it's the only one we have that makes sense. It's great for understanding ambient air temperature. All the others we use are the dumb ones. :crylaugh:

  13. The wildest thing about Fahrenheit is that it was arbitrary to begin with! The guy set 0° as the lowest he could depress the freezing point of water with salts, and then he set the avg human body temp as the next fixed point on the scale… but he chose to label it as 90 (and later 96) for reasons I don’t know.

I also agree with Jason - I like the size of the Fahrenheit unit for weather.

Personally I think we should switch to Kelvin.

Tell people climate change means more heatwaves with 300+ degrees kelvin. That'll scare em

If we’ve learned anything from covid as it relates to climate its that it was never about framing it so it could be understood, half the country will refuse to believe clear science if it inconveniences the economy even slightly.

I get that Celsius makes sense because its 0 - 100 is based on the boiling point of water. But when it comes to describing the air temperature, Fahrenheit is waaaayyy better.

  18. You can just say “it’s hot as fuck” or “it’s cold as shit”

what about Farenheit makes describing air temperature better?

  20. Fahrenheit Is a Better Temperature Scale Than Celsius
There's an old, bad joke about the two scales that goes around Twitter every once and a while: with Fahrenheit, you're really cold at 0°F and really hot at 100°F; with Celsius, you're cold at 0°C and dead at 100°C. Outside of the polar regions and deserts, the typical range of temperatures stretches from -20°F to 110°F—or a 130-degree range—with daily readings clustered even tighter for most of us. On the Celsius scale, that would convert to -28.8°C to 43.3°C, or a 72.1-degree range of temperatures.

Fahrenheit gives you almost double—1.8x—the precision* of Celsius without having to delve into decimals, allowing you to better relate to the air temperature. Again, we're sensitive to small shifts in temperature, so Fahrenheit allows us to discern between two readings more easily than Saint Celsius ever could.

I read another good article at one point, but I can't remember where it was now.

I guess that makes sense tbh

just find the scale extremely arbitrary

To be fair, isn't everything a little arbitrary? Who decided that water froze at zero degrees Celsius? haha

  25. The better question is who decided that the freezing and boiling points of water should be the fixed points of the scale haha
