It's wild that humans have the ability to completely destroy themselves pretty much instantaneously. Can't put the cat back in the bag unfortunately.

Okay, I'll stop talking about it now.

Let me lighten the mood with some food related opinions

Being from NJ a quite unpopular opinion I hold is that I'm not a big fan of diners. On one hand, they are a good choice because they have such a wide variety of food that you should have no problem finding something for everyone. But on the other hand, any restaurant with a menu that huge and varied, I just have a hard time believing the food is freshly made and good quality, gotta be a lot pre-made frozen stuff. Diners really aren't all that cheap either.

Diners are not good. Dirty, overpriced.

Diners are great, you just have to stay away from speciality food (like seafood) or “fancier” meals like steaks.

burgers, wings, appetizers, soups, breakfast food—you stick to those, you can usually find something good

Agreed. Diners are great for pancakes, omelets, and other breakfast foods that are nearly impossible to get wrong. If you're in the NY/NJ area and go to a legit Greek diner, it's also great for souvlaki. They are merely adequate at everything else. Being adequate at everything has its uses, of course, but I don't get the love that so many people have for them either, There are very few instances where I would deliberately choose to go to a diner unless its just the most convenient option for a meal

Mel's Diner where I live is fantastic and I won't hear a bad word said about it. And not just for breakfast.

Diners are just too expensive in places like Long Island because rent etc is so high but eating at a counter is the best dining experience

As someone who is very much a booth man, I can't wrap my head around why anyone would prefer a counter.

Not knocking it, I just literally don't understand it and would be interested in hearing the perspective.

Diners are great because they're open when other things aren't and also where the fuck else am I supposed to get a patty melt?

Booth if you're with people, counter if you're by yourself and in a hurry

Nice - What did you pick up?

RE Diners - the 24 hour ones I've found in my city aren't really all that cheap, that's a lot of overhead for keeping them lights on at all times (despite how busy they get with the drunks) A burger or a breakfast dish always hits the spot. Maybe I'd order a turkey club but anything else... why would you?

Also, since covid, not much is 24 hours anymore and I honestly like a local brunch spot with a more upscale vibe than a diner these days.

If I'm by myself it's counter all the way. I'm not taking up a booth.

Eating at pretty much any diner in the morning or late at night is one of my favorite things to do lol. Even if the food is mediocre, hard to truly fuck up breakfast food.

Took a road trip last summer and ate at Wildwood Cafe in Oregon which was my first diner meal in like a year and a half and I was almost emotional lol. Top ten meal experience. Comfy booth, breakfast combo, bottomless coffee, it’s all I want.

Okay, I totally understand this. I guess I didn't think about that because if I'm by myself I'm more likely to not eat out than anything.

I actually did at one point in my life go to a restaurant by myself and get a booth and it was a pretty uncomfortable and depressing experience, so in that instance, I totally get why a counter would be more suitable.

The way the post said "optimal dining experience", I just assumed there was something fantastic about counters I'd been missing out on.
