Funny enough, if you quit out during the boss fight you will most likely respawn when your sign back in outside the boss area with your runes, thats how it is in other games. So there ya go, cheese away.

It might have something to do with how major the boss fight is.

I actually looked up this boss you're tackling on a walkthrough that listed their preferred order for fighting the bosses, and it's something like #18. I dunno how many bosses are in the game, but it kind of sounds like you should be a ways before fighting it.

Anyway, I have something to add as someone who not only isn't playing this game, but has never played a Souls game, so I have no stake in this discussion other than as a gamer.

I feel there's a difference between something having bad game design and something just not being designed the way you would prefer.

As an example, I played and 100% Horace, which was a brutal platformer in many instances, and there were many times I cursed the designers for how they built some levels, and I died a lot. In fact, dying 1000 times was an achievement, and one I easily obtained.

I never considered it bad game design though, because they had a clear idea of what they wanted me to do, it was doable, and I did it eventually.

Here, from what I understand, you lose your runes at the place where you die. Based on that, it sounds like the designers want you to be aware of that and be mindful of where you can possibly die.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it's my understanding that this game is largely open world? Meaning it's entirely possible to stumble into somewhere you shouldn't be without even trying that hard? If that's the case, I can see what the designers are going for.

It reminds of the first Final Fantasy game, where you could very easily get to areas that were way beyond your ability to navigate. Like five minutes in you can get to an area with enemies that are three times your level and get curbstomped. It's that old school thinking of game design.

It's not meant to punish people, but it's meant to instill in you a sense of cautiousness. The place is dangerous. If you're not careful about where you're going, you can lose a lot.

Is this for everyone? Fuck no, and I have a feeling when I do finally dive into a Souls game, I'll be incredibly frustrated by it. Maybe a little less since I expect it, but I'm very much a "let me lie back and adventure" kind of gamer.

This is kind of like what was said earlier either here or in the other thread about how something can be 10/10 but sometimes only for a specific audience. It's okay to not like a game even though everyone else might be raving about it. This is true of everything, really.

I understand the person’s frustration but then it goes back to the argument so many people make where they ask to makes the souls series “easier” for casual fans and it’s just a debate that no side will ever win.

You gotta make it to the gate front ruins, its just north of where you start, on the west side of it theres a site of grace where you will meet an NPC that levels you up for now on

That’s what I read online and then the church also happened to be my third, so I guess either of us could be right?

There should be a point where you get to one of the sites of grace and when you sit down there will be an NPC sitting with you. They will open the game more.

From games are some of the most punishing out there, it's not hyperbole. If you can't handle losing your runes/souls from a boss fight because you didn't know better, save yourself the time dude because you're not going to have a good time. There is plenty more that you will get pissed at and blame the developers for.

I can see both sides on this.

On the one hand, the game is practically designed around being difficult. So to make it easier kind of defeats the purpose of what the game designers are trying to accomplish. Also, there's nothing wrong with a game series geared toward a specific subset of gamers. It knows what it wants and it drills that down to a perfection intended solely for it.

On the other hand, I like to play everything I can get my hands on, and I would feel at least annoyed if there was a game series that was critically acclaimed that I just couldn't get into because it was too difficult for me to play.

Confession time: I actually didn't get into the Batman Arkham series at first because I read about the combat gameplay and worried that I would fucking suck at it and not have a good time. I was both right and wrong about that. I did suck, but it didn't matter, because I still got through the games. I'll never get those combo achievements, but that's not important to me.

Anyway, my point is that if someone wants to play something badly enough, they need to understand they're playing by its rules. And if that's too much to ask, there are literally thousands of games right now that aren't as demanding.

Not to throw a wrench in the conversation but I find the ability to run away and go in another direction refreshing. It makes it “easier” in my head.

Flying in the face of everything I've said so far, I'm reading the comments in here, and you need to find a random NPC just to level up your character? That's like... NES Zelda levels of obtuse.

I knew inevitably this conversation would come up but for real the answer is simple. Go play something else.

Lol no, you unlock 3 sites of grace which are like check points and the 3rd one the NPC shows up. They are all over the map especially the starting area.

    Okay back to playing

And I'm gonna continue playing Psycho-Pass, where the only thing that can kill me is the amount of reading I'm having to do.
