Has Biden announced any useful sanctions yet or is he just condemning them

I think it's impossible at this point to know what will stop Putin; obviously these new sanctions are the next step, and if Putin cared at all about his people, his economy, he would respond. Yet, we clearly have no idea how far Putin is willing to go. So I don't fault Biden at all for the answer he gave. Since we can't militarily engage Russia directly (lest an all out war then ensues), these sanctions are really all we can do at this point

 

Not really seeing anything I'd say is bad or negative from the speech or press conference. Pretty much exactly as expected of the response and additional sanctions.

 

but sanctions haven't stopped him from doing what he's done. it's a complete non-answer. look at him struggle with the slightest push back from these reporters. the sanctions will stop him cus he cares deeply for the russians???

The sanctions on the biggest banks will have some real bite though, and they/the government have enough reserves to hold out only so long. How long is anybody's guess

I was thinking this the other day as well. Biden's "America is back" neo-imperialism and Trump's nativist "America-only" isolationism are both bad globally, of course, but Biden literally couldn't even begin to address Putin's demands and work towards a peaceful compromise without giving up all the foreign policy commitments he ran on (not that he we want to give them up). Trump's utter disdain for NATO could have been helpful here

Can someone explain to me why so many reporters were asking "why not sanction Putin directly?"

How is a direct sanction against Putin different than sanctions on Russia? What does this mean? To specifically freeze Putin's bank accounts or put a travel ban on him?

Yeah often, sanctions affect whole industries or large entities. But more recently, the talk of getting really granular and fucking with Putin's top oligarchs' international holdings (thus pressuring them to put pressure on him) has really ramped up.

I honestly have no clue what of Putin's can actually be sanctioned and I'd expect it's quite little.
Buuuuut desperate times, I guess.
