Finally got through this on a long walk around the city today. My big takeaway is that it's more Basement Tapes than the White Album, and while there's definitely some filler here I'm not sure it would be a better album if it were edited down. "Wake Me Up To Drive" through "Simulation Swarm" is probably my favorite section.

“No reason” made me cry like a baby when I first heard it and it caught me so off guard because my emotions are usually so repressed

    The Miracle of Big Thief

lots of great stuff here but especially this part gave me goosebumps:

"AL: Have you ever had those realizations as you get older, like, Why did I ever think I couldn’t wear that? And then suddenly you give yourself permission to wear that thing that you would never have worn in middle school. I feel we’re like, Why did we ever think we couldn’t do this in music? In a lot of ways, this record feels like our first record. It feels like the beginning. This is the key that unlocks the room that I really want to be in. And now that we’re in this room, I can actually start working with the materials that I want to work with."

    goddamn.

I think no reason is a tremendous song but as much as I like the texture the flute adds I’d be lying if I said I wouldn’t prefer its feature parts on guitar or like rhodes or something

Yea, to clarify as well, if “No Reason” is my least favorite song on your 20 song album…..then you’ve probably just made one of the best albums of all time.

Have always liked No Reason but I really sat with the lyrics for it today for the first time and was stricken by this overlooked (by me) line

Like a feeling, like a flash
    Like a fallen eyelash,
    On your sweater,
    Threading future through the past

and it hits me that there are just so many of these time/space Adrianne-isms throughout her songs that are nothing short of heatseeking missiles directed to my core

Her craft is so elegant and she is skating past her peers with each release as far as I’m concerned

Yea I agree with this. Her songwriting is always sublime.

  12. Finally got to this last night, haven’t really been setting aside dedicated music time this month. It’s soooo good though, pretty blown away overall and surprised by how groovy a lot of it is

Man it's crazy seeing "No Reason" that low on those lists! Absolutely adore that one.

As the king of being anti-"instant classics"...idk another album in recent memory as good as this. Carrie and Lowell? It's really perfect and weird and probably too long but I wouldn't cut any of it. I really think this is gonna be a milestone record that (when I'm still inevitably teaching in 50 years) kids will wear T-shirts of like they do with Dark Side of the Moon

The reception this album is getting definitely reminds me of Carrie & Lowell too. It also reminds me of the reaction when Fetch The Bolt Cutters dropped two years ago. There aren’t too many albums that drop and you go “this is an album people will be talking about for a long time”, but when they do more often than not you can tell right away, which is cool.

trying to remember the last time I had that feeling. I know the first time I heard The Monitor I was like whoa, this is important. There’s been more since, but that one definitely stands out off the top of my head.

I know the first time I heard “Not” I had a “we are witnessing one of our great bands” moment.

It is so funny to me that I honestly didn't like this band until I heard Not. Granted I just mostly thought Masterpiece (song) was annoying and skipped the next two records entirely, but Not blew my mind and made me go back and realize what I was missing.

remember really liking Capacity at the time but somehow missed UFOF when it dropped. actually somehow heard "Love in Mine" somewhere on the internet (I think they sent it out on a 7" vinyl to certain buyers or something?) and that was what hooked me just in time for the rollout of Two Hands
