I was slightly stunned that she even got convicted so a light sentence doesn't particularly surprise. But, yes, it is much lower than the recommended sentence (which was 7 years)

I had to go the medical center near me today for blood work and I walked in with a cloth mask and they made me switch it out for a surgical mask. Obviously not complaining but thought that was interesting as I’ve never been anywhere that doesnt allow cloth masks.

it makes sense since cloth masks are all but useless with the current variants.

would you rather he stay quiet and let it happen? seems like if you know its happening, screaming about it as loud as possible isn't a bad way to either to get Putin to back down (and try and make Biden look like a fool who got his intel wrong) or at the very least, give those who can even more of a warning to get out of the area.

whole situation feels like there are absolutely zero good moves.

I feel like the only good move would be to agree to end the expansion of NATO into Russian border countries, no? It's a concession to Putin, sure, but it's a minor one that would either avoid catastrophic war or show that Putin is a complete liar if he invades after giving him what he wants. Plus, you could always blame Ukrainian government corruption for them not being allowed in to NATO down the road

I don't think "people will think that I'm a liar" is really gonna stop Putin from doing what he wants. But I'm also not super educated on the whole situation. Doesn't that solution kinda screw over Ukraine?

  23. I don't think it's a binary choice with letting an invasion happen lol

I think this is needlessly tense rhetoric that follows a pattern for the US, whether it's a bald lie or not.
There are infinitely subtler ways of conducting diplomacy which don't involve riling up civilian populations even more.

short of a preemptive strike (which is clearly off the table) I'm not sure how you actually stop the invasion from happening. idk. this stuff is definitely way out of where I feel I have the knowledge to properly comment on. I just know "we warn of invasion and it doesn't happen" seems better to than "we don't warn of invasion and it does happen"

  25. Ultimately, Russia's demand that NATO stop eastward expansion is kind of a red herring, as everyone already knew that Ukraine wasn't joining the alliance any time soon. Putin is poking around for ways to secure future efforts to expand, but it could easily be just taht.
