couldnt imagine ILIWYS not ending with nana and she lays down. those are two of the best 1975 songs of all time. and you all know how i feel about paris. and this might be my dream is a great build into the finale too. honestly its the best ending of any album ive ever heard. its also my favorite album of all time though so. sorry for talking about something i actually like about this band carry on

 

i dont think any of the albums are much like each other in any ways beyond the most surface level stuff. the self titled, ILIWYS, a brief inquiry and notes are all remarkably distinct in their presentation and overall feel.

 

re: producers, I feel like at some point they'll work w Brian Eno whether that's in a production capacity or just some kind of general collaboration

 

they dont need anyone else to produce their shit, george is one of the greatest pop producers of this era

 

for sure, not disputing that I just had the thought bc of how much george and matty love eno that it'd be cool for them to work together

yeah, we’re in a p much identical boat. ILIWYS is probably my favorite album of all time (at this point I have a few records I generally hold in such high esteem that it’s almost a question of what I am feeling on a given day which one wins out), and I have absolutely zero complaints with it from top to bottom. She Lays Down is one of my fav songs by the band honestly, it’s a total gut punch for me (also like, can’t think of another song off the top of my head that broaches the topic of postpartum depression) and I really love, conceptually, how towards the end the album kinda strips back the layers and ultimately ends on such a bare and intimate note. we spend the whole album seeing how grandiose and larger than life the band can be, and the songs are so intricately and thickly layered throughout, so it feels like such a stark contrast and I think it works in spades.

the last two albums are pretty phenomenal and i would never, ever say i hope for a "return to form" or whatever, i want them to keep progressing and moving forward and trying new things, i just want a more cohesive artistic vision. i do feel like we were robbed of a proper touring cycle for notes that could have very well brought the album together in new and interesting ways as their live shows often do.

 

Moving on now to my 2x LP white copy of ILIWYS. Easily the most played vinyl in my collection, I used to fall asleep to side B in college.

 

matty's vocal break during the "I haven't been doing too well" bit in "Nana" is probably the most emotionally affecting moment in their entire discography for me

 

i couldnt hear it without crying for the first four months of owning the album. i wasnt doing too well

 

but im actually 90 days clean today which makes me think of how far ive come since ILIWYS came out and i was trying to detox on my own for the first time. scary, confusing, and horrific times (i was unsuccessful) but this album was the one thing keeping me together.

 

The Sound directly before that too, the album is just home run after home run.

 

Who among us hasn't sat in self-pity and cried in the car?

 

I also connected with this band during a dark period in my life from 2015-2017. There was a good while in there where I couldn't listen to Me without crying. Not everything Matty and this band has written has been an apples to apples comparison for me, but there have been songs or parts of songs that this band has made that just absolutely fuck me up.

Eternally thankful for ILIWYS for being something that I looked forward to every day during that period of my life. It truly was like a light in dark world for me.

for me. they’re all some of my favorite records ever regardless of my complaints with some of them, solely based on the strength of the songs and the sheer bliss they bring me as a listener. ILIWYS is just in that upper echelon for me where it’s amongst the absolute best records I have ever heard, ones that feel like so much more than just a collection of good or great songs and evolve into something greater than the sum of their parts. ones that become something life-affirming, life-changing, and with which my relationship is ever-evolving. ones that I grow with. you get the idea.

 

On ABIIOR now.

This is easily my favorite "The 1975" variation.
TOOTIME is underrated.
Be My Mistake sucks. From the top down a bad idea. I would like it more maybe if it further examined life on the road/artist struggles that lead to making the "mistake."

 

ABIIOR is my favorite day to day 1975 record and ILIWYS is my favorite album experience of all time

The beginning run of ABI is their best string of songs imo

 

Also, the transition for the cynical and sarcastic lyrics that were present on ILIWYS to the hopefully and honest nature of GYAT made me feel like I could take on the world. I connected with ILIWYS so strongly during that time since I was flirting with self-destruction through alcohol abuse, and hearing all of the snark stripped back on GYAT just made me feel like someone gets it. The themes don’t really tether a truly consistent thread but moments that shine through really do

 

Give yourself a try is the single most important song I’ve ever heard in my life, can’t really put into words what kind of shit that song alone got me through as recently as last year

 

I agree. My only tattoo incorporates the song. Don’t think that another song will so fully encapsulate a specific feeling as well as that one
