This was my favorite thread until the album dropped. Good lord.

  2. Oh hell yes, thank you. Glad I kept that preorder.

I get that but it just sucks because I'm pretty sure these are just pressing mistakes. The source of the plastic shouldn't affect the audio quality

Yea I’ve only ordered the eco. Which if the quality is subpar….just isn’t really what I want for a $40 record that I love.

The fact that he put Little Things in his worst tracks...

Anyways, don't really care about his opinion. Sure, he may be a far leftist, but he's done just enough shit in my book where I don't have much of an interest in his reviews.

Plus I will never forgive him for trashing the latest Julien Baker record

Playing this again and they really just never miss

When the backing vocals kick in in Sparrow I get chills every time

Quite a few great songs. She’s never done it for me in album form.

I can’t pick a favorite, every song is just that good.

I think she’s a compelling lyricist but I am not a lyrics-first listener at all, and I just don’t vibe with her style of songwriting and find the music to be pretty tedious overall :\ I’ve really wanted to like her ever since Sprained Ankle, and have given each album multiple tries but it just doesn’t click with me, I find myself just waiting for it to be over. on paper she should be 100% my shit but sadly nope.

anyway I don’t really want to turn this thread down a dark path, or spend a bunch of time shitting on a beloved queer woman artist. I’m glad she’s well-loved.

After a week and a half this is probably my third favorite Big Thief album. It’s my AOTY (Though BCNR, wow), but the 2019 albums I just think are better. I’m pretty sure Two Hands will just be my forever favorite, just an all time record for me.

  12. UFOF has been my favorite since it came out but I think if forced to choose right now I'd pick Dragon over it. Who knows in a few months tho

Oh yea I mean things change constantly. I have zero qualms about time stamping the way I feel when I feel it. Some posters get weird about what the “correct amount of time” is before you can discuss how good something is in relation to past work. No thanks, I’ll do as I please.

feels really fitting to me coming after Simulation Swarm given the subject matter and subtext of that song

Got a beautiful lilac and puke green for my 2 records.

just finished side A, really noisy pressing tbh. Side b isnt off to a great start either. Pretty unfortunate. I had a few patches off loud static at the end of the title track too. But lots of pops and crackles. I cleaned both sides with my spin and both sides with a fiber brush. These aren’t lo-fi pops either. Just a pretty bad pressing.

i also don’t see how the VMP pressing could be any better. Isn’t it just a different color. Not like they’re using different source or plates.

I’m curious about the black. Maybe it is the eco variant, idk I’ve never had one of these before.

    VMP does their own pressings

    Got a light?

No Reason was my favorite single but both Little Things and Simulation Swarm crept up on me like crazy when listening in full, other than that I like to love all of it, Dried Roses might be my other favorite currently

anyone else notice parallels between the lyrics of Mythological Beauty and Simulation Swarm? seems she’s bringing up her “long lost” brother (Andy/Andrew) in both.

Ummm I don’t believe so. They are a distributor. I was a VMP member for over 3 years. They don’t press anything. They basically have a contract to distribute. They help pick variant and even might help push along new laquers or have the masters pulled, but that stuff is usually limited to their album of the month selections. The Big Thief is just a monthly variant they put out. It’s the same plates. Just a different variant.

for the track selections they’ll contract out a pressing plant to do the actual pressing. Usually something subpar like Gz.

though they generally do pretty good work with the AAA selections in the Classics track.

  22. I don't understand how all this shit works either but I have the VMP and the eco, have listened to both and the VMP is noticeably better. I only heard one place where her vocals clipped where they don't on the digital on the VMP as opposed to at least 5-6 on the eco. Still more surface noise than I'd prefer on the VMP but it's a lot better

I'll try to do a side by side video sometime this weekend to show people what I'm talking about

Curious if anyone in here has the standard black and how it sounds? Would love to hear from ya

  23. It's pressed at a different plant tho so that could at least explain the disparity in surface noise right?

For sure. Didn’t know it was pressed elsewhere, there’s tons of variables to be sure. That combined with the eco variant I would assume would be the main contributors.

I just looked at Discogs and it says both were pressed at GZ media. GZ has a history of being pretty hit or miss (I’d say more miss than hit).

In this case I would guess that maybe the recycled eco is probably the culprit for the static. I haven’t had a ton of issues with normal color variants in the past, I know a lot of people have issues with glow in the dark pressings. Even outside of the pops/static/etc I still think the pressing sounds pretty dark and suffocating almost.
