Big Thief - Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe In You (February 11, 2022) Album • Page 24

  1. Wonder if Adrianne realizes she's on a songwriting tear comparable to like 1965-67 Bob Dylan right now

  2. (I'd been thinking that for almost a week and decided to finally say it haha. Bold claim but I honestly think it's true, both in terms of quality and quantity that's about the only precedent I can think of)

Yeah she’s produced more genuinely great albums in the past 5-6 years than a lot of other artists produce in their lifetimes

  4. And they may very well have the next album written if not recorded for all we know lol

I mean if not her than who? Our generation gets to have those caliber of songwriters too. I feel like sometimes we are conditioned by older generations to believe nothing will ever be as good as it was and we have to settle with second tier leftovers, it’s bologna. I’ll take Adrianne Lenker and Big Thief over a ton of celebrated classic rock acts at this point.

  6. Oh I agree with that 100%. Humans have only gotten more creative in the last 50 years if anything. Actually I was more thinking about whether an artist of her caliber realizes how good she is while it's happening haha. It's a weird comparison but elite athletes know they're the best at x sport or whatever--Michael Jordan knew he was Michael Jordan while it was happening--but I wonder if someone like Adrianne is aware that what she's doing is not just typical songwriter stuff. Most really really good songwriters would be doing well to have 2-3 songs over the course of their career that are as good as the 20-25 best songs from the last six records she's been a part of

The amount of people (read: boomers) who have said something to the effect of “Music today sucks and it will never be as good as it was in my generation” meanwhile take no effort into actually discovering new music and make that claim based on shit they heard on the radio is…a lot. What they don’t realize is there was a lot of crap being released in their generation too that has long been forgotten.

I do think over the last five or so years we’ve been in kind of a golden age of indie rock/folk/Americana. Big Thief, Julien/Lucy/Phoebe, Mitski, Angel Olsen, Jade Bird, Sharon Van Etten, Lomelda, Florist, Courtney Barnett, Japanese Breakfast, Sufjan Stevens, Clairo, Lana Del Rey, Snail Mail, Faye Webster, Soccer Mommy, etc.

So when boomers say nothing is as good as before in terms of music, well, they’re just not looking hard enough haha

This feels like the album they were already destined to make. Not to be a total simp but I’ve adored all of their previous output and hearing them stick the landing on such an outrageously ambitious album is really satisfying.

saved this post as a photo so I can check these artists out. Probably only have heard 1/3 of them and while this Big Thief album isn’t super connecting with me yet I absolutely love indie rock/folk/Americana art so I got some work to do.

ya there have been albums I’ve loved and songs I’ve thought were pantheon worthy but the amount of excited I am about this album as a whole is as high as it’s been for anything in a long time. Probably have to go back to jay som - everybody works for something that connected with me with this kind of immediacy. I think I still do pretty well with exploring new music and not getting stuck in things I liked in college, but I have definitely felt like the amount of shit that just feels immediately like magic is less frequent so it’s extra noteworthy when something does.

That said I will say if I take out the late to the party factor of not hearing it til December 2020 and that it took about 10 listens for the entire middle to click with me, I think Saint Cloud is pretty close to this good.

The thing with Notes is that while it has some good songs it has a bunch of not great songs and overstays its welcome imho. Comparing it to this album feels criminal haha.

About to wrap my 4th listen, and I can safely say this exceeded all my expectations. A fantastic record, not a second wasted.

I've had a few background listens so far and am looking forward to having a deeper dive.
Having heard so many of the songs already it will be interesting to see whether any new ones start to become favourites.

They are such an incredible band
