I do think a lot about how there haven’t been a lot of artists that have caused widespread moral panic and protests since the late 90’s/early aughts like Eminem, Marilyn Manson, Slipknot…maybe Odd Future counts too?

In certain circles in happened with “WAP” or Lil Nas X or whatever, but that’s not full on moral panic levels and more just culture war bullshit i guess.

Eminem invented making up a guy to be mad at , but there was enough criticism of his homophobia that he had to claim Elton as a gay friend

I think the moral panic evolved when they realized that making a general enemy like crt or lgbtq people works a lot better

I may have this wrong but I feel like most of the time back then artists were being hounded by governments or religious groups because they were being blamed for things like Columbine and violence in general so most people 25 and younger stood with the artists against those who wanted the artists “cancelled” because it was stupid to blame artists for those types of things.

Long story short, yes, Eminem at times was responding to people trying to “cancel” him but in a different way than we want people held accountable today.

That rap lyrics would literally inspire physical violence used to be one of the few things liberals and conservatives agreed on.

I feel like there are two messages on MMLP. The school shooting stuff is prevalent in White American and The Way I Am. There is also the Steve Berman shit where he calls him out for the homophobia and everything on an album that hasn't been released. It's wild how he took the Repub approach to saying "I'm saying all of the stuff they don't want you to hear!"

A lot of discourse around the LA riots was that rap music needs to be censored or outright banned. I feel like it kind of worked, Eminem rose to fame saying a lot of obscene shit but it helped that he was white and it wouldn't be the anthem to racially influenced riots. Just to acts of homophobia and domestic abuse.

That was another thing that stuck out listening:

Look at these eyes, baby blue, baby just like yourself
If they were brown, Shady lose, Shady sits on the shelf
But Shady's cute, Shady knew, Shady's dimples would help
Make ladies swoon, baby—ooh, baby!—look at my sales

Let's do the math, if I was black, I would've sold half, I
Ain't have to graduate from Lincoln High School to know that
But I could rap, so fuck school, I'm too cool to go back
Gimme the mic, show me where the fuckin' studio's at

When I was underground, no one gave a fuck I was white
No labels wanted to sign me, almost gave up, I was like
"Fuck it!" until I met Dre, the only one to look past
Gave me a chance, and I lit a fire up under his ass

Helped him get back to the top, every fan black that I got
Was probably his in exchange for every white fan that he's got
Like damn, we just swapped, sittin' back lookin' at shit, wow
I'm like my skin is just starting to work to my benefit now

A bit after the pandemic began there was a quote from J (or Shaggy, my god I’m surprised I still remember his name lol) saying, “if we lose one Juggalo to covid that’s too many” or something like that in response to cancelling shows and someone on this site posted the tweet and said, “what a world where ICP handles covid better than our president”.
