The brief segment on Apple Music sheds some light on the album and how she almost didn’t make it and explains how “dark” it is.

I really like this album and have a hard time describing why it feels so different than her past records. She feels less at the center of it, in a way that differs from Be the Cowboy where she’s making direct eye contact with the listener at all times.

I think it feels like a low stakes record without some sort of big overarching theme. Certainly not a bad thing. I like it overall, need to listen again.

I completely disagree with the takes that this is more a collection of songs rather than a cohesive album. I heard a very clear through line of Mitski wrestling with her fame/future in the music industry.

didn't listen, but I would say that it reminds me a bit of pinkerton. not sonically, but tonally.

Fist listen today whistle doing yard work. Idk I think I’m already connecting with it more than Cowboy. Like others have said Should’ve Been Me was a standout.

I definitely prefer the more understated approach vs the grandiosity of Cowboy.

It's interesting to compare this record with Puberty 2. Both feel/felt very transitional, and both feel like Mitski trying to navigate uncertainties surrounding her identity as an individual and a performer.

  16. Surface level observation this and Be the Cowboy complement each other in the same way Puberty 2 and BMAMC do.

The hook in Stay Soft is so deceptively infectious. The first time I heard it I was like “that’s the chorus” and now it’s been stuck in my head for 6 hours

“Staaaaay Soft” has been repeating in my head like the music to a dvd menu left on at a slumber party when you’re 10 years old.

the line for the LA popup was hilariously long , I had to bail. I'm sure she'll have more shit on tour anyways.

I feel like half of this album is sad indie girl and half of it is 80s powerpop, I like it!

I love love love this record! The singles I listened to pre-release didn't grab me on their own, but when taken as a whole it's wonderful. My only complaint is that it's too short, but that just means I listen to it more.

I’ve only been able to listen all the way through one time, but I was pleased with this record despite some of the lukewarm reactions.
