I’m sorry...do you mean to tell me that Yarael Poof is not from the Skywalker bloodline?

There are so man things I loved about this movie, yet so many things I hated (off the top of my head, Mary Poppins in Space, Captain Phasma getting two lines in before being killed off and Rose racing out to stop Finn from dying and somehow succeeding before offering up a weak excuse and fainting) which make me unable to love the movie as a whole. It was good, but still had so many flaws.

There are a couple reasons why making Rey a Palpatine was idiotic.

one part is that it doesn’t fit into the dynamic that both 7 and 8 set up for Rey and Kylo. They were shown as opposites in many ways. Male vs female. Trained vs untrained. Rejects family vs longing for family and so on. Another aspect that was shown in 7 and 8 is having “mighty” force bloodline vs a nobody lacking any source of force heritage. 9 deciding to suddenly remove part of that dynamic is dumb and doesn’t serve to speak to anything.

obviously Rey being a nobody was massively emphasized in 8. The movie literally ends on a shot of a nobody being inspired to be a hero. The message, new to the universe or not, was abundantly clear with Rey as the focal point. 9 switching that again doesn’t really serve or speak to anything, it merely cheapens the messaging of 8.

such an utterly stupid decision to make her a Palpatine. Shows such a lack of understanding of 7 and 8. Bizzare since JJ made 7.

I would have liked if Rey had been what JJ said was the plan he had while making TFA (a Kenobi). Making her a daughter of a clone of palpatine was just bizarre.

Aside from being an awful Star Wars movie that hurts both previous movies in the trilogy that came before it immensely, The Rise of Skywalker is one of the only movies in recent years that I have shut off without being able to finish multiple times. Every time I try I just turn it off because it is complete and utter nonsense that doesn't make a lick of fucking sense. It takes every single weakness of modern blockbuster filmmaking and turns it up to the Nth degree. It is also STUNNINGLY obvious that the filmmakers had absolutely no idea what fucking story they were telling and a couple people that didn't have any understanding or knowledge of the Star Wars universe pretty much just made something up on the fly. I can't get over the amount of money Disney threw at that pile of trash while completely ignoring all of the basic principles of good writing and good filmmaking.

I had a similar co-worker who brought it uo almost everyday for a year straight because they knew I liked it. Like, we got to a point where I told him “You don’t like it. I do. That’s the end of the conversation.” And he would still send me Youtube links on why it sucked. It was borderline weird. It honestly killed any love I had for the franchise, which the third movie drove the nail into.

I'm planning to show my girlfriend Star Wars for the first time and 9 was so fucking bad and retroactively ruined the last two movies that I don't think I'm going to even include the ST even though 7 and 8 were good/great

The more time that passes, the more negative I am on TLJ, I think. Some of it was great, and that includes some of what pissed manchildren off - Rey being a nobody was an inspired choice in particular. The team up/not team up moment also great.

But I can't really look past the flaws - Canto Bight goes on way too long, Leia floating, the sudden stakes of gas in the star wars universe. I'm also not crazy about the Luke stuff. I absolutely hate the Luke almost killing Kylo scene. I don't love - agreeing with the manchildren alert - that he's no longer a badass. That alone doesn't ruin it for me, but it feels a little bit like a swerve for swerving's sake to me in hindsight.

TROS was worse, don't get me wrong. It was a mess on it's own and wrecked the good things about TLJ. But honestly I think both were pretty disappointing after TFA. That movie wasn't perfect by any means, but it was an almost perfect set up. I'd have done a ton different with the other two.

  15. My experience is similar except replace the co-worker with the internet as a whole. I have fond memories of spending tons of time on Star Wars subreddits between 2014 and 2019 for example, and by the time The Last Jedi came out, the backlash for the trilogy as a whole was so loud, yet kept getting stronger and stronger, making not only that community but many others unbearable. The night I left the theater for IX, still processing the mess they managed to come up with, I knew this would get even worse so I bailed out.

I do feel like I'm missing out because I haven't consumed any other Star Wars content ever since. No Mandalorian, The Clone Wars, Boba or any of the books and videogames. That's how much my excitement over the franchise has lessened.

I'm still curious about the Kenobi series though, as that's one that has been teased forever at this point.

I didn't love TLJ but I did think they did a really good job setting up for a finale that I was very much looking forward to.

TROS was just an all out atrocity in my opinion. Just nonsensical decisions over and over again. Don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a finale given how excited I was to see

Leia saving herself with the Force is a fanciful sequence, which is perfect for this franchise that's always been pulpy and sometimes straight up whimsical. Everyone's got their own tastes when it comes to entertaining stories, but it's such a bummer to me that a seeming majority of Star Wars fandom equates "fanciful" with "bad" and "Mary Poppins (derogatory)." Between that and the whole "Revenge is the best prequel" truism, Star Wars fandom generally wants something out of this franchise that's just fundamentally at odds with my tastes. Which, makes me pessimistic about the franchise ever again doing something that's for me, personally. At least Taika Waititi's sensibilities line up well with mine, so maybe that one will be good.

The best Disney Star Wars is Rogue One, imo. It was the new and refreshing story telling I wanted within the Star Wars universe.

as someone who hasn't even been in the fandom so to speak, but always liked Star Wars a great deal, I came out of TLJ with a newly found love for the franchise. I couldn't *believe* the discourse online. It was one of the best times I've ever had at the movies and everybody I went with felt similarly, even those that are usually hard to please.

After 2 years of toxic discourse I was cautiously optimistic for IX but it literally destroyed any and all interest I've ever had in the franchise.
