Sure & Certain came on on the radio today and my sister said it sounded like church music. I can get where she's coming from with that, and I'd say that's sorta how some of the rest of this sounds

  7. yesterday I listened to this under a tree. been having some thoughts but I'm gonna spoiler tag in case you want to discover yourself.

This album deals a lot with self-care and finding wholeness undetermined by other people. Looking back, this seems to be true for a great deal of their music, but I really do think it takes the center stage on this one. "Integrity" is a measure for comfort in identity, consistency in spirit and action, rather than a judgement of morality. "It's all what you do when no one cares/when no one's there" comes off as positive, enlightened rather than lonely/melancholy. Jim's letter is a little out there (that first sentence is a mess, grammatically speaking, ha), but it definitely makes sense when listening to the album. It's meditative and affirming, not to mention sonically gorgeous. The album is incredibly special.

"Pol Roger" is like a sequel to "Polaris" to me. I've always thought of the latter song as encapsulating the moment on the Futures cover--alone out there, singing into the cold, dark night. Crisis turning to contemplation. "Pol Roger" approaches this from a more....comfortable angle.

Everyone knows how much Invented means to me, so it's no surprise that I think this band truly has never missed a beat. Their music still rings "golden age" to me, but 20 years is a very long period for that to be true. They are simply masterful at what they do.

sorry, don't want to tease. but damn.

Jordan nailed it IMO. This, from what I pick up, has a lot of jim's best lyrics. I mentioned goodness either in this thread or the other, but I get a lot of similar vibes from this album. Especially pol roger. Song could legitimately be on that album and I wouldn't bat an eye

  11. I really mean that "Polaris" comparison

  12. I thought of Goodness also, thematically it fits. thinking of love as something insular, messing with the usual treatment of the concept, etc.

One thing I really don't want is for any of the lyrics to "Pol Roger" to be spoiled. Some of Jim's best and honestly that song and the title track made my jaw drop.

sorry for all the tags, I don't want to alienate people who don't want to know things yet haha

This is such good news, as someone that wasn't high on Invented or Damage. The Polaris mention, the praise for the lyrics, the GGD comparisons...this is gonna be a good one.

I remember a point at which any contemporary Christian music I heard started sounding like the back-end of the early-/mid-2000s scene. And what your sister said actually fits with the GGD comparison too, since a decent portion of their music since 2006 sounds like bland Christian rock.
