    Player's Log: Minute Of Islands.

100% complete, total playtime of 5.7 hours.

The crashing thing I experienced yesterday is actually a known issue for some graphics cards. Fortunately, the developers created a beta test version for people with those issues, and using that version, I was able to complete the game with no further problems.

The game itself I enjoyed very much. I still wouldn't really consider it a puzzle-platformer, but there are some light environmental and push-block "puzzles" sprinkled through the game that makes it a little more than getting from Point A to Point B. It's mostly still a sit-back-and-enjoy-the-ride kind of game.

I also get the feeling that the latter half of the game may have rushed through development, if only because as an example, the number of collectible memories per island shrinks dramatically as the game goes on. First island has 11, last island has 3. I guess I'm saying that as the game goes on, it becomes less about the game and more about the narrative and getting on with things. It's not really a bad thing, just an observation.

As for the game's narrative, it was much bleaker than I thought it was going to be when I set out. The unsettling imagery I mentioned set the tone, but I didn't know for what.

The plot is very much a deconstruction of The Chosen One, and all the ills that come with putting that weight on one person, especially a young child. Over time you learn that your character has become reclusive, paranoid, abrasive, and arrogant, and has distanced herself from the very people she's trying to protect.

Fortunately, the game ends on a bittersweet but hopeful note. While she does end up ultimately failing in her original goals, she reconciles and leaves with her loved ones for hopefully a better future.

Anyway, that was fun. Now time to spin the wheel and pick something else.

    (spins wheel)

Okay, so the winning category is CFK, and the winning game is Sacred Stones.

CFK is a company that publishes a bunch of really obscure indie titles, with their biggest title being a remake of Wonder Boy called Wonder Boy Returns Remix. I bought that game because it's Wonder Boy, come on, and then I bought their other games cause they were on sale for really cheap and I was vaguely interested.

Anyway, Sacred Stones looks kind of like Cave Story except it's my understanding that it's not a Metroidvania. We'll see how this goes.

Isometric 3D action adventure game. Think of like a darker Link’s Awakening, much less colourful lol

Player's Log: Sacred Stones. 100% complete.

    So that went by quickly.

Basically imagine Cave Story but with no narrative, no exploration outside of a couple of secrets, and levels that are basically designed to be Boss Rush mode, and that's this game in a nutshell. Only items were shields, gas for some reason, and weapons. Four levels with four bosses each.

Beat them all and found all the secrets thanks to a combo of Easy Mode and a walkthrough. Got all the achievements. Even in Easy Mode, two of the last bosses were fairly challenging, and satisfying to destroy.

Anyway, I guess I'm spinning the wheel again faster than expected.

And the winner is... technically Yesterday Origins, but since I haven't played the first game either, I'm going to play the first game first. So Yesterday. Made by Pendulo Studios, of whom I have played and enjoyed their Runaway games, so I'm expecting pleasant things.

Finished Halo Infinite campaign. Overall excellent. Really enjoyed it. Rolled my eyes a few times for sure, but I think it ranks pretty high for the series. Probably my #3 overall.

dead last for me coupled with Halo 2.

That said the first 4-5 or so hours were *chef's kiss*

    (Reach > 3 > ODST = 5 = 4 > CE > 2 = Infinite)

Oh man, our ranking is so different haha.

    I'd be 3 = 2 > Infinite > CE > 4 > ODST > 5 > Reach
Yeah, the whole lumping journalists into this massive bucket to play victimhood is so tiring and lame. Jez did walk it back saying he worded it poorly and it wasn't what he meant, but yeah obnoxious mindset regardless.

I have famously shitty taste when it comes to Halo, but I do genuinely like them all a lot.

Haha, it's all good. It's one of those series where they're all strong (even 5) and I can see an argument for either. I generally really like them all except Reach is pretty hard for me to get through for some reason. Not sure, but I've actually never finished it and tried 4-5 times haha.

I think Halo’s art style peaked with Reach and I do love how gritty it is, but I will say it hasn’t aged gracefully. The armor abilities are a very clumsy way of infusing stuff like sprint.

from a purely moment to moment gameplay standpoint, Infinite and 5 reign supreme.

Yeah, I think it aging the least gracefully is probably my hang-up. CE has a lot of nostalgia (and a remake) so it holds up for me. Same with 2 and 3, but Reach just feels dated. Oh well, still great. Gotta get back to it and complete it.

I remember popular opinion being that Minerva's Den is the best part of BioShock 2.

  25. 2 has some pretty cool stuff going for it but Minerva's Den is better
