It started with a small, very loud section in the crowd and it just naturally grew in between the last few songs to the point where it felt like the whole floor was singing it a cappella after Cute Without the E.

You could see they were like “oh shit, guess we have to play it now” before actually acknowledging that they hadn’t practiced it at all, but they’d give it a go. Nathan literally had to show John the chords to play it prior to starting.

It also started around the time they went on their Weezer kick and people were getting restless for more TBS songs.

Ok, that song they hadn't practiced at all live, was basically better than any song in their set when I saw them with JEW a couple months ago lol.

The Fuse 7th Ave Drop performance of “this photograph” is amazing.

Got to see them perform it on the 20th tour. WYWTB is still my favorite TBS album

These guys absolutely love doing cover songs, guest appearances, live albums, acoustic albums, side projects, theme songs, podcasts, tours and festivals. I get it...gotta make that money. Some new original TBS music once in a while would be nice though.

I mean, they released 7 studio albums in a 14-year-span and then took a few years off of writing/recording to celebrate their 20th anniversary and then a global pandemic hit and they all live in separate cities/states. I want new music just as much as the next guy, but I certainly understand why it's been so long.

    Their album gaps in years have been 2 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 3 - 2 - 3 and today is just over 3 since Twenty released if that counts.

I have feelings about stuff like the "My Name Is Jonas" cover but you really can't say this band doesn't crank out full-lengths with remarkable consistency.

And if a longer delay helps us get Straylight Run headline shows, I'll wait forever for more TBS :-p

  12. do we not get original TBS music once in awhile already? like every 2 or 3 years? like almost every other band? haha

Twenty isn't an album. It'll be 6 years since Tidal Wave this year. Even going through all the lineup turmoil they've had over the years, there's never been this long a gap. Not saying they owe us new music, just saying it's been a long time for them.

Yeah it has been a long time by their standards. Twenty is just a greatest hits album with two new songs. So we've had two new TBS songs since Sept 2016. Since we just mentioned The Maine...they've released three records since Tidal Wave. Paramore, a band that generally skews toward longer gaps between releases, are working on their second album since Tidal Wave. Mansions, a band that rarely does anything, released an album, an EP and a record full of reimagined old songs since Tidal Wave's release.

I'm not saying TBS "owes us" anything...because they don't. They grinded for a lot of years and fans were fortunate to never have to wait very long. But to say it hasn't been an unusually long time between releases for them is false.

Yes, but we know the why. Not every band makes it to 20 years, so taking a year to celebrate that instead of writing/recording a new album was well-deserved. And they were about to write/record in early 2020, and the pandemic hit. Because they all live in separate areas of the country, it was harder for them to get together during 2020 to continue writing.

Had their 2019 year-long tour not happened, and the pandemic, it's likely we probably would have gotten their 8th album in 2019 or 2020. Had just the pandemic not happened, we probably would have had a new album by now.

the why isn't really relevant to what I was saying. We all know why. My point is that two things can be true: it's been an unusually long time for them and that gap is ok given what we all know about the circumstances.

Pure speculation, but I can understand why the band wouldnt be so eager to jump right back into the studio, pandemic or not.
They worked their asses off on Tidal Wave, which ended up being their most cohesive (and some would say their best) album in like 14 years. And the reception from fans was lukewarm. Didn't do that great in sales or streaming. I'm sure they figured they could just take their time writing and recording the next album, and just rely on anniversary tours and great hits albums in the meantime to keep fans satisfied.

They also lost a long time member, so one less song writing contributor.

Yes. The why is totally understandable and reasonable. I guess what I'm trying to say is that given the unfortunate timeline that caused delays and the fact that they're back in action doing tours and festivals, things like going to a studio not for new music but to spend time on a Weezer cover for absolutely no apparent reason other than "for the hell of it" is mildly annoying. I know some of you liked that cover, and that's cool. I just didn't get it and thought the approach to it was questionable. Posting teasers on social after a career-long gap between albums only to release a Weezer cover was certainly an interesting choice. Just my perspective. I realize others feel differently and that's ok.

I don't want to speculate on this but, just a passing thought I had is that there may be some legalities stemming from Eddie's departure that require tidying up before they can continue releasing music as Taking Back Sunday. I think the odds are low that THAT is what is holding them up, but it would not surprise me to learn that.

I follow Eddie on Instagram and I certainly feel for him. I wouldn’t be surprised if there is some stuff that needs to be cleared up there. Seems like he’d come back in a heartbeat. He really wants to play.

I posted about this back in 2019. I'm sure there were some legal clarifications or situations that had to be resolved.

Yes it has been longer than normal since their last album regardless of circumstance, but I really doubt a Weezer Cover and guest feature are holding back the writing and recording process.
