I don't want to sound like I'm judging or anything but $299 is what I'm sure quite a few people would consider expensive. Like, that's a few bills or a couple weeks worth of groceries being spent on one item.

Also, if I'm going to spend a decent amount of money on a VR unit, I'm absolutely not going to spend it on one that's owned by Facebook

I’m with Vase, you’ll never find me owning a Facebook headset. Only chance i’d ever even consider picking up a headset is if fives years in the future we’re looking at a solidly supported PSVR2 with an extremely impressive library of high quality Half Life Alyx tier releases.

fair point but I mean it’s no longer prohibitively expensive like it was just 2-3 years ago. You don’t need a computer or a console, just the headset.

I mean Facebook is literally losing money on every headset sold, but if you want to spend more for worse quality be my guest I guess.

the only product that is better than the Quest 2 is the index and that’s a thousand bucks.

Also, it’s now possible to use the Quest 2 completely decoupled from a Facebook account.

It takes a piece of my soul to know Oculus is owned by Facebook but it’s is the highest rated AND cheapest. It’s for my son and he has been begging me for one for his birthday and said he would ask for nothing else if he could get one.

Literally John Carmack works on that headset.

also no ethical consumption under capitalism, I don’t feel better about owning Microsoft or Sony stuff either, and especially not Apple products.

I've been waiting to see how the new playstation VR will be before considering a headset.

If we get good use out of the Oculus I will pull the trigger on a PS headset at some point.

My bank account is negative 200 right now, 299 sounds literally impossible lol

I get the point you’re trying to make, and i’m not trying to pick a fight, but the ethical consumption under capitalism thing is more about taking blame off of low income communities who are often cornered into supporting unethical industries like fast food or fast fashion. Be careful how you bandy that argument about, using it to justify buying a luxury product from one of the least ethical companies around the globe belittles the sentiment that it’s originally intended for.

Very fair point and something to take into account. To be clear I haven’t purchased the headset yet and I appreciate everyone’s insight and opinions. I have time to weigh my options.

If you want to partake in this hobby, you are also cornered into supporting some of the worst companies on this planet. I know Facebook is worse, but as I said, they’re literally losing money on this headset.

Right now I have the PS VR (second edition if that matters at all, it had some slight differences). I find it very comfortable and easy to use. The only thing I don't like about it is the setup. Personally, I think the hassle of the setup is overblown, but it is annoying to have to have so many cables and such.

I'm very much looking forward to the PSVR 2 because tech comparisons have shown it's going to be incredibly impressive if they launch good software for it. It eclipses a lot of the competition in terms of straight tech specs, but as we know it's all about how it's utilized and if the cost/ease of use is right.

no ethical consumption under capitalism to me just means there’s no need to have a pissing contest between which company is worse and should never be supported. everyone should be wary of where their dollars go but you’re not better than someone who bought a VR headset from Facebook due to the inevitability of there being horrible companies you yourself have put money into. that doesn’t mean don’t call out shit companies and draw your own line, and when it comes to wide scale boycotts and strikes never cross the picket line, but someone choosing not to purchase a Facebook VR headset will do absolutely nothing to shift the paradigm so to speak, and same if someone does choose to buy one. small scale personal purchases aren’t really consequential, if you ask me. if some wide scale movement was taking place specifically targeting their headsets well that would be kind of stupid because they sell them at a loss but it would make sense to get mad if someone decided to buy the headset anyway. that’s just one example. I just don’t think we have enough individual consumer power to make a difference. it’s through large movements that shit gets done.

That said I do respect people sticking to their principles, but when it comes to VR, getting around Facebook is very expensive

I should also make it clear that I was really just trying to make a specific point about the ethical consumption argument. Nate, I absolutely don’t want to shame you for getting a Quest, especially for your kid. I think as mescalineeyes pointed out, it’s pretty much the no brainer pick, both from a price and ease of use standpoint. I didn’t realize you no longer need a facebook account to use one, that’s a reversal of the policy since the last time I looked into it, which is a huge plus.

Jake, totally agree with you on all that, I was in no way trying to come off as holier than thou or anything. The phrase “no ethical consumption under capitalism” specifically bugs me if because i’m wary of any kind of argument used to excuse personal responsibility. Didn’t want to overreact or anything, but nonetheless thought it might be something worth bring up.

for sure, although I do think it’s important to note the shortcomings of personal responsibility and the strength of collective action, which is again how I view the phrase
