WWE beginning the Saudi shows was the beginning of the end for me now that I look back at it.

 

Yep, they already have Daniel Bryan there to do the "veteran who could take the title at any minute" shtick, Punk is much better used in character work pushing younger guys.

Only thing I'd change about the match at all is probably a few less power bombs. Like Wardlow hits #2, goes to cover, MJF stops him. He hits #3 and #4 and Punk rolls outside the ring, Wardlow/MJF argue for a bit. There's something about like 8 or 9 that brings in "ref should have stopped the match"

 

Punk had to be the one saying ‘give me 100 powerbombs’

 

the match also put over that Wardlow can beat Punk. which adds a lot of spice to the MJF/Punk match. is MJF going to step up and do the same, or is he going to lose increasing possible tension between Wardlow and MJF?

 

Exactly! It's good story telling, at the end of the day that's what good pro wrestling is. To have this archetype that has to always be followed in order to put talent over would make things stale. AEW booking has done a great job organically getting newer talent over in many different ways.

 

A big part of it is how they booked everything to build for those shows. They had to basically teleport back in time for most of those shows, and it killed so much momentum. The first Crown Jewel is featuring The Miz, Dolph, Rey, Brock, Big Show accompanies The Bar, and is headlined by a 1999 RAW main event.

The next Crown Jewel, Lesnar absolutely buries Kofi so he can have the title while facing Cain. We get Team Hogan v Team Flair. The show after Goldberg beats The Fiend. And they pull ridiculous twists to get Shane and The Undertaker involved in their random ass trophy matches.

 

And the crazy thing is, although KSA is paying a truckload of money, I'm sure WWE could have convinced whoever necessary that they were putting together an entertaining show. But I'd actually believe it was Vince coming up with all of the ideas anticipating what he thinks they'd want to see.
