I like Reid of course but he never quite reached how good I thought he'd become

    The rivalry is back on

one team won 3 games at a -142 point differential and one won 9 at a +86 point differential lol. One needs to rebuild and one doesn’t

Wentz finished top 10 in QBR despite being absolutely abysmal in the last 2 weeks of the season. I don’t really feel strongly enough to say that he was “good”, but a first round pick is probably “fair” for that level of production. He was, at worst, on par with first round pick Mac Jones, who had the same sort of “hide the QB” games (and probably would have cost slightly more than 1+3 to move up to get him), cost one first round pick less than Justin Fields, who didn’t play well enough to save that regime, and the teams that wanted to win and paid less/got the worse FA or trade options (Denver, Carolina, Washington) all either ended with a fired coach or double digit losses and a bottom 5 QB situation in the league

  8. OL was our biggest need going into the last two offseasons and we ignored it. Slater was there for us. Pain.

But having a QB on a rookie contract is far more desirable, despite the unknowns, than having a QB making almost $30m that everyone knows isn’t good and being stuck in QB purgatory like the Colts are now.

You can talk about point differential and QBR all you want. The Lions were very clearly rebuilding and are still in the process of doing so. The Colts are very clearly trying to convince themselves that they can compete for a super bowl despite only having one playoff appearance since Luck’s retirement.

I just am unsure what your alternative is — fire the best drafting GM in the NFL, sell off everyone good, and bottom out to hopefully land in a good position to get a QB and hope you don’t just do the Andrew Luck thing again and have someone good and break him because of a lack of surrounding talent (or draft someone more developmental and not develop him at all because of a lack of talent?)?

I’m not saying they had to tear everything down. I just think they would have been better served trading up for a QB or trading for a better QB than Wentz. I mean, imagine giving up two first round picks for Justin Fields with a competent coaching staff and organization. Or even Mac Jones. I feel like getting one of those two and using all that cap space to build around them in 2022 and beyond would have been the better move than giving up a first and a third for Wentz.

I have largely been a fan of Ballard’s approach, but his decision to trade for Wentz, while understandable, was predictably bad and it’s gonna be a real big bummer if it ultimately costs this team in 2023.
