Lynn seems like a likable dude judging from his time with the Chargers, but, as an offensive mind and game manager, he is dreadful

Defense might have something to do with it. Injuries. Division.

 

There's also kind of a Trumpian element to it...every politician wants to be as bulletproof as Trump, but few people are actually that narcissistic to genuinely think they are never wrong and feel no shame.

Cant fake being a sociopath, basically. And certainly not for decades.

And some of that is a put-on for TV, as when he does MasterChef/MasterChef Junior he shows he's actually kind of a reasonable dude. But its definitely what people expect.

As @EntryLevelDave points out, part of the myth that NFL coaches are the way they are is because Belichick kind of defines the modern coach. If people still expect Lombardi, well, Belichick wouldnt do well

injuries sure but that doesn’t explain much of the Lions failures. Maybe only D’Andre Swift right? Wentz never had to go without JT.

division… yeah the Colts division is weaker than the Lions so that also lends favor to my point. Even excluding the obviously good teams (Packers and Titans)… I’d rather face the Jags and Texans than the Bears and Vikings

so then do we not agree the Lions had a significantly worse and less healthy supporting cast this year, making Goff’s job one of the hardest QB jobs… than the Colts, who were great and healthy and made Wentz’s job a lot easier?

Get in a time machine to go back 5 years and tell me we'd be debating Goff vs Wentz in here and I'd have a very different idea of what football would be like 5 years later

 

I think they have similar levels of supporting casts. Both have a good offensive line, a good rushing attack, one single wide receiver. Lions have TJ. Colts have a better line and RB overall. I don't think they are far off at all.

yeah and then when you factor in the injuries and the division and probably the coaching too; plus the fact the Colts rushing attack and defense is FAR better not just kinda better; it’s fair to say that explains the difference in stats between Wentz & Goff and doesnt really show a gulf between them
