  3. I think the hype around Notes, the subsequent delays, and the somewhat bloated result, along with Matty's scandals (deserved or not), is the main reason.

I also think people will get over it when the next release invariably slaps.

I don’t think I would call it bloated seeing as it’s barely longer than ILIWYS. Sure, there are more songs, but time-wise they are almost equal.

I like Notes, but something about the flow of the album as a whole doesn’t work for me. I’m fine with all the different styles they went for, but it can be a bit jarring to listen to at times.

thats the exact reason why it feels bloated - the lack of “thematic” cohesion lends to a jarring song-song transition that plods along at times.

Notes as an album doesn’t work but if it was like a mixtape it’d be perfect if that makes sense lol. Like the late 00’s early 2010’s gucci tapes that have way too many songs but a ton of interesting next level shit

What I’m saying is notes on a conditional form is their chicken talk

  13. Agree with all this. Some of the ideas are really cool (re-creating HSNCC with strings comes to mind) but after almost two years, I can safely say the album has an odd flow, especially off the top. And yet I still like almost individual song on it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Notes almost reminds me of a mixtape in terms of its sequencing and delivery. not that I feel like I can say that’s how they meant it to be or not, but at its length w how unwieldy it is and the breadth of styles explored, it just reminds me of that medium kinda inherently? I think at times the flow is pretty great considering, but it’s mostly clunky in the opening sequence where every other song is an instrumental track. gets a little iffy again maybe in the mid-end but it closes out well enough imo. I personally like the last few songs leading up to Guys way more than I like Guys, so Guys almost feels like credits rolling to me by the time it hits. the emotional peak of the record is Bagsy and Don’t Worry for me. in terms of flow it’s certainly their weakest so far, but at the end of the day I still consider it my second favorite. I think the ways they pushed their sound this time around just were more up my alley than ABIIOR overall. or maybe it’s less that and more that I always wished there was a song or two w a little more edge on ABIIOR in the backhalf. gets a little schmaltzy and saccharine and almost lethargic as it goes on and the songs all work, but it isn’t my favorite as a run of songs. idk. hope that makes any sense at all lol.

ILIWYS is probably my favorite album of all time, for me it is a pretty much perfect record. I don’t ever see them besting it at this point, especially w the emotional weight it has developed over the past 6 years (christ). I would love to be wrong tho.

  17. ABIIOR is probably their "best" but I have a soft spot for the S/T-era. Such a perfect roll out.

S/T had to grow on me oddly enough, don’t love the production on a lot of it for some reason. almost feels flat and clinical maybe? that said tho I love p much all of it now, but I love the EPs more ha.

ILIWYS is their best and my favorite. I have a very special place in my heart for that one. I love ABIIOR as well, but those two are probably the only two albums from this band that I love. I like all of their other releases, but I feel way more inclined to just play my favorites from them rather than listen to them in full these days

I’ve always thought they they wanted to further play with the “mixtape” format they explored with ABIIOR while elaborating the concept with the added thread of claustrophobic dread from “our generation” but lost the needle in the haystack. It’s allowed on ABI since it’s so “short” but they pigeonholed themselves with the statements they made before the album which resulted in a slightly diminished offering. Some of their best songs are absolutely on this record.

and as much I love that George produced a lot of the record I really hope his recent collaborations will allow for them to open up the boards more for others to help grow their sounds

  25. ILIWYS always sort of felt like a refined extension of S/T to me (which is undeniably great) whereas ABIIOR feels like the band really pushing their song writing and production in new directions. Somehow it feels both eclectic and cohesive, despite containing two of their all time worst tracks (Be My Mistake and Robot theme boo hiss tomato tomato tomato).
