did two listens today. the darkthrone album teenage fanclub’s grand prix. both good as hell.

 

I once bought this album box - most of their albums as CDs in like cardboard, very odd - for about 15€ because I knew Midlife Crisis from somewhere (Tony Hawk? Idk). Never properly listened to them anyway. I should do that.

Right on. I somehow even missed that song. I literally ONLY knew "Epic" before delving into their albums the last month or so.

 

The thing that gets me is how blatant it is that Brandon Boyd from Incubus copped Patton's entire style.

The EP that Mike Patton did with the Dillinger Escape Plan when they were in between vocalists is the absolute best use of his voice on a record I think. Their music style really suited him.

Listened to To Bring You My Love by PJ Harvey for probably not the first time, but first time in a long while. PJ Harvey is definitely someone that I feel I should like, loads of my favourite musicians love her stuff, and in theory she definitely makes the sort of music that I should love, but the albums I've listened to just don't click with me.

No change this time unfortunately, she's clearly very talented, and I'm sure repeated listens would help me warm to it, and appreciate the nuances of it, but it just didn't work for me. Lyrically it seemed interesting, and the songs are interestingly structured, but it just felt like less than the sum of it's parts somehow.

Dunno. I'm sure she'll click for me someday.

 

Have you ever heard White Chalk? I've not heard all of her stuff but that one sticks out to me. She's someone I've always wanted to get more into too honestly but that's the only one of hers I've really gotten into.

No, I haven’t heard that one - I’ve maybe heard 5 or 6 of her records over the years, hoping it’d click, but I’ll make sure to check that one out next time I want to give her another try! Thanks!

The only weak(ish) song on the album fer me is Farewell And Goodnight, which is still a great song

1979, Thirty-Three, and Muzzle for me probably. I'd agree Take Me Down is one of the weaker ones, but it's still great. I legitimately think every song on the album is good and there's also some fantastic material that didn't make the cut (Medellia!).

Also shout out to the effect/synth that triggers every time the snare hits in By Starlight

 

Speaking of "Take Me Down" - will revisit this in '98 (the year it came out), but has anyone here heard James Iha's solo album, Let It Come Down ?

I recall my Dad having it on CD when I was a kid and have pretty fond memories of it being a pleasant (and mellow) listen.

 

"1979," man. Just an all-time great pop song.

 

I still so vividly remember being 10 years old with my boom box and a blank tape, just listening to the local rock station and WAITING for them to play "1979" so I could press record and listen to it whenever I wanted. Consuming music was so so different.

Eventually my Dad bought the album on CD, but when he discovered that multiple songs said FUCK , he wouldn't let me listen to/borrow it. I begged him to record just the singles and songs with no profanity onto a tape for me lol
