I can't believe it's the year 2022 and I've only just started getting into Jawbreaker. Thanks to Dan Ozzi's book for getting me to check them out properly.

hello! i just logged in for the first time in awhile. thanks for sharing some new topshelf things in here over the last few months.

to address the web3 stuff, i am happy to discuss any of it with anyone. i wrote this to communicate more about the how/why for my involvement and curiosity: https://sone.mirror.xyz/Xd-T4gCjEWkYMNcWfEd7uMIz6qyoUXu-fWmRfnqlzMo

please read this before making any assumptions, if you have the time.

i also recently had a pretty good conversation with Sooper Records:

i don't want to hijack the thread and won't respond to any queries in here about this, so hmu on Discord if you want to chat on this more:

    i'm topshelfrecords#7256
sone's Discord (not really fully setup yet tbh): https://discord.gg/zMvDRrfmk9

otherwise i'm not hard to find elsewhere online.

don't worry, nothing about topshelf is gonna change, unless we make it a co-op artist and fan owned label at some point. otherwise, i have no plans to issue music NFTs or whatever. please know anything i do in this zone will be coming from a place of trying to help artists and organizations and is in the spirit of experimentation. we're always trying new things in this way, whenever possible (we were one of the first labels to have a bandcamp, we were the first label to ever have a responsive mobile-first website, we're always embracing new ways to listen to and distribute music). i see this continued curiosity in the potential of new things as an extension of that.

no one is suggesting that these two things can't co-exist tho. the Mona Lisa is considered priceless because of its ubiquity in other cultural contexts. also, it's harder and harder to discover obscure things from 15 years ago because platforms go down, URLs break, etc. when web3 and dweb models are implemented correctly, this isn't an issue.

i'll use this example, because maybe it'll resonate in this thread in particular: most of my favorite 2000s and 2010s obscure emo stuff that i loved growing up is gone forever because Myspace went down. songs i'll never hear again and bands that are basically lost to time now. a decentralized trustless database is a safeguard from this happening. also, remember this? idk, i'm just not really down to trust platforms and institutions for their word. music metadata is the plumbing by which all artists are paid. it's extremely broken rn. a trustless, decentralized standard for metadata could fix this and streamline payments to all artists. this also can help with scalping problems for ticketed events. there are honestly endless use cases here. there's tons of utility—no one in this space is searching for it, we already know it's possible and are trying to enact it for a net positive for everyone. what you're seeing rn with like, Ape jpgs everywhere is the cringeiest, lowest of the low hanging fruit possible. i'm not down with it either. it's still so early and everything is rough—there's a lot that can happen is all i'm saying!

zine's can and should exist in any context you want them to! this is how i'm gonna do mine. we'll probably make a mailorder risograph edition too! to address some concerns, i wouldn't allow for a majority stake to be held by any individual, and the goal is to, longterm, make it so not even i or anyone else has majority control, but that will take time. the reasons i am putting it on chain are numerous but i won't go into them all. one example tho, is in an early proposal for how to handle automatic splits of revenue for the zine:

    primary sale revenue:
    •5% of ETH revenue / 500 $SONE - sone community treasury - soneworks.eth
•5% of ETH revenue / 500 $SONE - public goods funding - hand-curated at first, then shifting to deciding by community vote - will be transparently viewable at publicgoods.soneworks.eth
•5% of ETH revenue / 500 $SONE - other DAO(s), orgs, communities, individuals, projects, etc. - signals we’re in support of what they’re doing and want to give it a prominent voice in an early stage of our own project - dit.soneworks.eth
•5% of ETH revenue / 500 $SONE - all previous zine participants - this compounds value for the earliest to be included. value in this context means voting and decision making within the community, but probably eventually other things we haven’t really fully conceived of just yet. and, yes, also as a monetary thing. a louder voice in several contexts, and in a new zone where there exists a real opportunity to establish new norms and structure to what we value. this would function as 1/(n+1)=share%. so everytime someone new is added (every time a new zine issue gets published, basically), the share % everyone holds would incrementally decrease proportionately, but the longer you’re involved in this %, the more equity and say you have in the direction of the community overall - will be transparently viewable at participate.soneworks.eth
•80% of ETH revenue / 8,000 $SONE - split proportionally between all zine participants - your individual ETH address

secondary sale revenue (when someone who bought a digital asset from us decides to sell it, a % can go to these parties, in the below allocations, in perpetuity. this has never been possible before and isn't otherwise):
    •2.5% ETH / 0 $SONE - sone community treasury - soneworks.eth
    •2.5% ETH / 0 $SONE - public goods funding - will be transparently viewable at publicgoods.soneworks.eth
•2.5% ETH / 0 $SONE - other DAO(s), orgs, communities, individuals, projects, etc. - will be transparently viewable at publicgoods.soneworks.eth
    •2.5% ETH / 0 $SONE - all previously selected participants - will be transparently viewable at participate.soneworks.eth
    •10% ETH / 0 $SONE - the artist - for hopefully obvious reasons
•80% ETH / 0 $SONE - seller/owner wherein the 2.5%, 5%, & 10% amounts are handled as part of a smart contract that is paired with the NFT.

lol, dangit, i actually thought this example made more sense but i'm not a great explainer of things :/. so, basically, the reasoning here is that i don't want to include Paypal or Stripe for payment processing fees. this is direct payments on Celo network which has transaction fees of fractions of a penny, so everyone keeps more of the money generated. we'll be storing the money as CUSD until it is claimed by artists. CUSD is Celo's dollar-pegged stable coin, so the money will be the same amount regardless of when it's claimed, and regardless of how much the value of any cryptocurrencies have gone up or down. for now, the infrastructure is v centralized, correct, but we gotta start somewhere. the goal longterm is to migrate away from AWS (Amazon) to more affordable (and permanent) decentralized solutions. also, i don't view anything in binaries, everything exists on a spectrum. painting things in lanes of strictly only web2 or only web3 is counterintuitive imo. i don't expect the entire internet to become this. hybrid solutions and integrations will be numerous imo! and that's good!

every transaction on Ethereum does this fwiw! but also, with what i am proposing, artists and creatives are now holders of Ethereum—without having to buy it—it was paid to them (and if what we're proposing here works, will be continually paid to them), all without having to change anything about how they currently represent their work via traditional platforms. the slice of the pie artists get NEEDS to be bigger, but like, i'm also trying to show there is another pie.

thanks for reading, love y'all :peace:
