But now you need to try and understand WHY you like it, apparently?

 

i just finished listening to this album for the first time, also because of this thread / conversation lol, and it was a lot of fun. Gonna have to revisit it during non work time to really focus on it, lotta jams on it.

 

Sometimes I wish people would just say what they’re really thinking on here so we know who is secretly racist/has bad views/etc. but then we’d have to read lots of posts like that insane one and the subsequent responses from the same user

 

I mean, Kele being black AND gay definitely makes me feel better about myself and my wokeness.

The second album goes, too. They fell off after that, but those first two are a lot of fun.

Oh obviously the other side of the coin is far worse, somebody brought up hootie and the blowfish...just imagine all the fragile white people reconsider their lives cause they enjoy that band.

But also realize the white people thinking they are better for liking that band. Not sure why that offends you but whatever.

If the argument is that occasionally artists can get a small exposure boost based on things like age/gender/sex/race/anything else about them that has very little to do with their art at face value, then I get that. That does occasionally happen, it’s indisputable (and it’s not always a bad thing). But this mutation where you strip away hard work and artistic integrity from black artists because you don’t happen to like them as much is WAY off base. Demeaning the merit of talented black artists down to the color of their skin is fucking low and absolutely racist. As a black person that grew up in a white as fuck scene that I routinely felt put down for participating in, I find your view incredibly offensive and your resistance to criticism very telling

 

That's fair, I'm pretty neutral on Bloc party and turnstile but I think that's why I can have this perspective. Of course my opinion will upset folks who think this band writes "all timer" albums because they have their own biases already. That's a given. It's like folks who will cancel anyone except their own favorites.

This is also why people here have decided that I've gone beyond bad opinion and decided to just insult me. Because to say that race may be a factor in your day to day life is a tough pill to swallow.

Agree with the first half, you're completely off on the second half. That's why it's coming off that I'm not accepting criticism because the base for the criticism is off.

I listen to POCs music because they make good music and I don't even think about "having to listen" because of "wokeness" or whatever, and I imagine that's the case for most folks on this forum. Just like how most folks on here aren't listening to female artists just to show off they don't listen to only men or because they find said women attractive. People listen to things that they enjoy, there's not much more to it than that I feel. Obviously I don't know everyone's intentions, but based on the regulars who post in many different threads, I feel comfortable saying this.

I mean...I can see the rough outlines of the "I have a black friend" parallels you're (maybe? idfk) trying to draw here but it's a terrible argument, notably (but not only) bc of the near certainty that a significant percentage of people that like Turnstile had no idea their bassist was black until they read your comment
