I remember when that album came out, how much I adored "Signs" and "Ion Square" and really enjoying nothing else on the album. First two records are still so great, though.

 

Good lord. Love to be told that one of my favorite bands is only one of my favorites because they have a non-white member.

White guilt is huge in this scene as is aversive and internalized racism (I voted for Obama, I can't be racist), and my personal favorite is the colonized mind of non-whites in the alt rock world. Think a lot of the responses here meet that standard in that you all don't know what racism is, at all. And if you're white, kinda makes sense.

But hey you like Bloc party so you can't possibly be racist.

 

If you're white you probably should and you should think about your motivations behind enjoying shit. And if that's too much work for you, that's your problem not mine.

 

Calling out white people for suspect shit isn't racist. If that confuses or offends you, go read some Malcolm x.

Unless I've seen them live, I don't know what half the artists look like that I listen to. I like their music because I like their music. I feel like that's gotta be pretty common. Like, I liked the new Turnstile album a lot, but until today, I had no idea what they looked like.

 

If it shifts your opinion in any way of their sound you should inquire as to why. If you hold the same exact opinion then that's awesome.

But my shit take is that, unfortunately White America and western Europe has such entrenched racism that our unconscious biases will come through, whether or not we want to acknowledge it.

Personally, I think acknowledging it instead of denying it is better for your own personal growth. But that's on you, I'm not your mom.

 

Ok a couple things:

1). I'm sorry you've experienced racism in your life, especially post-9/11, that sucks and you don't deserve it.

2). Your premise is essentially "I think this band is overrated, so if other people like them more than me, their enjoyment is performative", which is a bullshit argument. If Bloc Party was your favorite band of all time, something tells me you wouldn't be making this point.

 

Also the general consensus is that Bloc Party have one great album, one good album, and a bunch of throwaway material, so I can't imagine why that would be the case if their success was based upon performative enjoyment and white guilt.
