I loooove the Master but I think Parasite is maybe the most perfectly constructed film I’ve ever seen, and it’s pure entertainment.

Parasite is maybe Bong Joon-ho's third best movie. The Master is a modern American masterpiece.

 

Parasite did the classic move of becoming so overrated that it actually became underrated within two years of release.

 

Love both but it’s clear The Master is the better movie, not taking anything away from Parasite because it’s an excellent movie is it’s own right.

What’s his first two?

 

Mother and Memories of Murder. A really great career.

 

It is the only foreign-language film to make it this far. I can't see calling it underrated.

 

Underrated is perhaps the wrong word , but it’s the highest rated film of all time on Letterboxd, and one of the few “foreign” films that have broken through to mainstream recognition, and the only (I think?) non English language film to win an Oscar, despite the last 80 years of cinema having plenty of wonderful non English films.

It got elevated beyond how good it was in 2019, that it’s perhaps easy to forget that it’s still a remarkable piece of cinema and art.

Perhaps my overrated / underrated is the wrong way to express it.

 

It is funny to think that there is a sizeable percentage of America that has only seen one foreign film and it is a story about class struggle and the immorality of capitalism.
