But then where is the data that is showing this? Why isn't this being made easily accessible by the CDC? And wouldn't a "10 days or whenever you test negative" approach be better? Because right now, rather than addressing these questions, which I think are quite reasonable, all I'm hearing is that "this move makes the return to normal [i.e. economic growth] simpler and more convenient." Which doesn't really seem like a scientifically informed argument to me.

And even some doctors supporting this decision, like Dr. Jha in his thread yesterday, have supported lessening the isolation period only if they could get a negative test result as well (see below), which I think most of us can agree is reasonable, yet unrealistic with the current testing situation. It may very well a fine medical decision, but the messaging at the moment is indicating that economic factors are likely driving it

Many of the experts I am reading - the above included - seem to be just ignoring the fact that large swaths of this country don't have easy access to testing, and even the ones who do often have to wait a long time for results.

We don't currently have a solution to this fact, and we won't for a while yet, so they just ignore this fact because it is inconvenient, a lot like the way Biden is just ignoring this fact because it is inconvenient, and we're supposed to play along and go back to work and go buy stuff and risk my children's lives to go eat at fucking Applebee's and just shut the fuck up because hey at least it's not Trump.

    Fuck that.

The pandemic has shown that in the United States the default is *ALWAYS* going to be economic concerns, even for agencies whose sole purpose is KEEPING THE MOTHERFUCKING PUBLIC SAFE.

The CDC is an absolute fucking joke at this point, but what they should be doing is laying out the guidelines on how best to keep people safe and minimize the risk of spread as much as possible, and letting other people worry about the economic impact of the guidelines they are laying out.

If the data showed that anyone exposed needed to completely and utterly quarantine and isolate away from all other human beings including close family for 120 days, then they need to pass this guidance along and let other people worry about what that would do to all businesses and the economy at large.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention should be concerned with controlling and preventing diseases and that is all that they should be concerned about. They've shown that this is more than enough for them to worry about.

Also, as others in here have already pointed it out, why would the CDC want to make guidelines even more complicated and confusing (as well as more lenient) in the middle of a major surge. The big announcement is that "you only have to isolate for five days", but the fine print is this only applies IF you are asymptomatic (fairly ambiguous anyway considering the frequency of Long COVID symptoms) and IF you wear a mask. Of course, most people will only be aware of the reduced time, without any of the other requirements. Odd timing if this was solely done in the interest of public health

Probably the main consequence of this is that it will empower employers to pressure workers to return to work even if they still have like a sore throat or other mild/improving symptoms after 5 days

  10. I think there’s a general overestimation to any regular person paying attention to the CDC to be honest.

Most people are kinda just going about their lives in cloth masks from what I’m seeing. I can barely talk my family and friends into getting better ones (and quite a few flat out ignored my suggestion and reasoning).

tbf Biden, Fauci and the media aren't telling people to wear better masks and most people don't read Atlantic articles and Twitter threads and panic haha
