The guitarist has a(nother . . . he had an album and EP that dropped last year) solo album coming out in April. Punky alt-country-ish stuff:

They definitely made some questionable financial decisions at SXSW, and it's very much this tweet

and people are allowed to give their thoughts, but it's a bit weird to see other band dudes clowning on them. I feel like people could be...more empathetic at least? Here is one example:

Yeah just read through that and I'm more on their side than not. The general point is correct: professional music (like most things!) is much more feasible for people who come from upper middle class or above backgrounds. Like an unpaid internship, where putting entirely aside the inherent shittiness of having someone work for free, it's also a filter that weeds out anyone who litearlly can't afford to not get a paycheck.

I understand the jump to shit on them when basically all their expenses were airbnbs, but it's not really feasible for 5 people to sleep in the size van I imagine they're touring in. So they could spend more money for a trailer/bigger van/extra car which eats into their revenue in a different way, or they could pay for lodging. Which, people shitting on them must not have traveled since COVID started if they think $200 a night is splurging in/near a major city in 2022.

Not including merch is a little suspect, I guess - I've never been to south by but the idea that a band of their stature couldn't sell tshirts over the course of a week of shows doesn't really hold up for me. But still!

are we still lucky to be here? Prestigious

Saw the post in the Accountability thread, but my thoughts on the matter are probably more appropriate for here. The discourse around is could be a lot better, but it baffles me that a band is literally in Austin for five days and only makes $134 from one house show. I get that a lot of SXSW events are unpaid, but were they just chilling for five days otherwise? Did they literally only have one paying gig to hop on? Why not include merch in there unless they didn't have any? Couldn't they have done a Venmo or a tip jar?

Plus, there's also the harsh reality that a lot of DIY touring is inherently done at a loss to begin with. It's always been that way. I'm all for creature comforts where you can get them, but anything like that can put you in the red. It's been like that for the hardcore bands that are being dickish about it since the 80s so I can see their perspective despite their tact not being the best.

Just the way it was written reminded me of it, it wasn't meant to be a dig at them (because I also do support their choices here)
