Are there Marvel actors or directors who have harnessed their fame for good, like Kristen Stewart from Twilight or how Channing Tatum grew from so much garbage? I can only think of people who have stopped making interesting work, like Ruffalo or Johansson.

You literally said in another thread that Power of the Dog (starring Doctor Strange) may be your favorite film of the year lol

I would argue Bradley Cooper also

I think you could argue that Hiddleston has as well.

That is one, although in his case he was already very famous when he started making the superhero movies.

A lot of the actors named were on an upward trajectory before being in an MCU movie

Also “being on an upward trajectory already” wasn’t part of the premise, the premise was “MCU actors or directors harnessing their fame for good”. If you don’t like the answer, the solution isn’t to change the premise it’s to not ask the question at all lol.

Tom Holland, Hemsworth, Boyega and Daisy Ridley are really the only ones who only exist in the disney universe

I’m not completely caught up on her non-Marvel stuff but Elizabeth Olsen has done some great, interesting work since being cast. She’s incredible in Sorry For Your Loss

Tom Holland has also *tried* to do different things as well. None of it has been good, but he’s at least making the effort.

Yeah Hiddleston is definitely the exception. Since he started playing Loki he’s worked with Del Toro, Ben Wheatley, Jarmusch, not to mention his past collaborations with Joanna Hogg. Wasn’t he even supposed to be in the Souvenir but had scheduling issues?

I didn’t make the original point so I wasn’t necessarily trying to argue for it, but I think someone like Bradley Cooper and maybe a couple other of the names that have come up have careers that were well established independent of their MCU roles, and their post-MCU careers look like about what I’d have guessed for them anyway, but I don’t feel passionately about the argument in general.

Bradley Cooper has worked with Del Toro and PTA and made his own very good movie since being in the MCU.

When he was announced as Rocket Raccoon I remember people being surprised such a big star was doing a voice role

That may be true, but he was in the MCU and continues to do interesting things, not just content to let his career become cashing Marvel checks and being in blockbusters. He fits the premise.

I also feel like Cooper has the asterisk of not physically appearing in the films. I never remember he’s even associated with Marvel until someone else brings it up

Voice performances are just as valid as physical performances imo but people are obviously free to disagree

Wasn’t trying to say voice roles aren’t valid. Just that he’s not particularly recognizable as a Marvel cast member

Anyway I get what people are saying about actors doing interesting post-MCU work, I just think in some cases it’s hard to define whether the connection is specifically because of the commercial success they gained from their MCU role or just that they’re a good and popular actor. In the simplest terms, some are and some aren’t, though I do think there’s a little trend where bigger the star they are at the time of joining the MCU (Downey, Ruffalo, Johansson) the more lackluster their post-MCU projects, and then the Cumberbatch level people have actively been doing cool stuff. Tom Holland is maybe the exception to the young actor who has the world at their fingertips and just makes doodoo
