Some of the cinematography in this is bafflingly 2001 B-movie.

I gotta say I've grown to like the visual style from what I've seen of it :p

And even if this film's visuals, fx work, stuntwork, etc is less ambitious than previous installments, is it really that baffling? It was filmed in the midst of the pandemic - we don't really know to what extent that might have impacted the quality of the production. ;)

Some of the scenes feel like they are from Wishmaster or something. Its definitely a specific decision to do it. I'm not mad about it. It is just jarring in those instances.

I'm only half way through so far. Those scenes just really jump out at me.

An inconsequential shift as the continents drift.

this was pretty solid. not sure it managed to reconcile the whole meta-sequel thing with how often it was... just a sequel, but I was generally okay with it

Henwick was absolutely the best new addition, honestly the whole thing could have been her kicking ass and not suffer at all. Yahya and NPH were both having a great time. was not feeling the dude who played Agent Smith at all, but I also found his motivations and abilities at any given moment incredibly confusing and unclear. was probably the wrong choice to keep flashing to clips of the original Smith every time he spoke, too - just reminds the audience how absolutely iconic and irreplaceable Weaving was in that role

was dope to see some smaller characters like Sati come back (was hoping she'd be with Seraph but no-one else understands that Seraph is the coolest motherfucker in this whole franchise like I do). Merovingian is always welcome but his scene in this was pretty bafflingly pointless. Old Niobe was... not a good decision, her fist-bumping Shepard is definitely the worst moment in all 4 movies

all that aside: reframing The One as Trinity and Neo together instead of just Neo fucking ruled. was worth the time for that alone

I could definitely be wrong about this but I thought one of the main points of the end of the third movie was that neo made it so the machines were able to finally delete agent smith. So how/why was he back in this?

It seems like a pretty pointless gamble to plug back in the guy who brought down the original Matrix. They could have just had some program be responsible for the Matrix trilogy games.

Are the actions scenes in this really that underwhelming, or is it that there's less of them? Some of the setpieces in the preview footage looked amazing to me lol, even if they'll lack the visceral impact of the stuntwork and practical fx in the first two films.

Now that you mention it, I did think "this looks like a TV show or made for TV movie" while watching that first trailer, but the more footage I saw, it kinda went away or maybe I got used to it. I still haven't seen the film yet tbf. Hopefully most of that style if it gets as noticeable as you say is indeed intentional ^_^

The original stunt coordinator, or some title like that, didn't return, so that explains some of it.

The fight against the bugs was not good at all. The finale on the roof looked incredible. If you told me they just blew up a helicopter over a major city I’d believe it.

I believe this guy passed away between Shang Chi and this. He’s done some legendary choreo.

Chad Stahelski (director of the John Wick movies and one of Keanu's stunt doubles for the original Matrix trilogy) plays a Chad named Chad.

Why isn't everyone giving this movie 5 stars based on that alone

Passed away or passed on the film?

A friend of mine mentioned that this works a lot better coming right after the first film. You can almost ignore everything that happens in Reloaded and Revolutions and it sort of fits together nicely as a duology.

It says “based on characters created by The Wachowskis”. Director is all Lana.

This movie doesn't work in any way whatsoever if you ignore Reloaded and Revolutions, it's deeply connected to what happens in those films.

Yeah so much wouldn't even make sense. What a weird thing to say.

Most of the flashbacks are from the first film and the subsequent history is retraced by Niobe and Sati just fine. In this film you have Neo searching for Trinity, in the first it's the other way around. I really like Reloaded and Revolutions (and the first trilogy as a whole) but it's an interesting thought that I think has merit.

Like what? What couldn't be explained with a little exposition?

It could be explained but you've still missed out on chunks of the story. You could watch this after reading a plot summary of the first if you wanted to but why would you?

I'm saying you don't necessarily need the other two to enjoy this movie. The first and this are almost reflections of each other in a way. I just think it's interesting to view them as such.

You could yeah but like I said you could probably enjoy this without watching the first too but you'd be having a worse experience. You said this works better without watching the other two and you can ignore everything that happens in 2/3 which isn't true at all since so much of those films tie into this.

This one's definitely more of a reflection of the first but a lot of the meaning is given by what happened in the sequels.

What you're describing here isn't "ignoring" what happens in the sequels, though. It's just skipping them and getting an abridged Cliffs Notes version of what happens from this movie. Even if you just watch this first movie and this movie, you're still receiving the information as to what happens in the sequels. My point was that you can't watch this movie and ignore the sequels, which is what you said your friend was talking about.

That is what your friend is saying, though, by suggesting you can ignore the sequels and just watch this first one and this.

Also, they can be reflections of each other without ignoring the sequels. They already are.
