Strange, I'm in Lowenthal's district and our Mayor (Long Beach) announced he was running for that seat after Al announced his retirement. Didn't realize we're most likely being folded into another district. Not sure what he's going to be running for now.

Manchin is taking a lot of heat for this, and rightfully so. But not one Republican has come out in support of this bill even though it would greatly benefit their constituents. The system is fundamentally broken.

I assume Collins is retiring next term but she could cement herself If she flipped. She won’t, but yeah.

Yeah but no one would expect republicans to vote for anything that looks even remotely like this. They don’t run on helping their constituents they run on bootstraps and promising to make things worse for people they tell their constituents to fear. Democrats control everything needed to pass legislation, the blame should lie with them.

I'm not saying that I think this is the case, because I don't - but if you look at the way Biden is governing, how he is doing the job, the decisions he is making and what the very obvious fallout from those decisions is going to be, it looks like he is purposely fucking the democrats over in the upcoming midterms. It really does.

I believe he actually had really high turnout with young voters in the election, and now he is actively making the decision to just tell young people to go get fucked.

    I don't understand it.

When one side is ACTIVELY PARTICIPATING IN A FASCIST FUCKING COUP, it really shouldn't be hard at all to look absolutely golden by comparison, and Biden can't even seem to not look absolutely fucking atrocious.

The last payment I made on my student loans was March of last year. Since then I've remarried, been diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, moved clear across the country, changed jobs twice, and we're having a baby next month.

Somehow I bet my payments will be even higher than they were before

I do ultimately think that Jayapal made a mistake by giving up all leverage before the Senate passed the bill (Manchin really did want BIF to pass), but I think she was betrayed by Biden overplaying his hand as well as by Manchin. Maybe Biden really thought he could get Manchin to vote for the bill, but all indications seem to be that he was never really close to supporting it at any point. It seems more likely that Biden saw his approval ratings sinking and felt that he needed to get something to pass immediately. Considering that Biden won on his supposed ability to get things done (with Republicans, no less!), I'm not sure that progressives should let him off the hook for his agenda failing

So here in NJ our 7 day average for cases is 5,581, the highest since January 15th. Sounds terrible, but here's the bright side:

    January 15th 7 day death average: 81
    December 19th 7 day death average: 20

    January 15th hospitalizations: 3,550
    December 19th hospitalizations: 1,902

    January 15th on ventilators: 427
    December 19th on ventilators: 181

Now mid January was about where the peak was from that wave, and we certainly aren't at the peak for this one yet so they will likely go up a little bit, but the numbers are (unsurprisingly) much better with about 70% of the population vaccinated.
