My guess is we see a glimpse of the Wild Hunt before the season is over.

can you hop in on this from s1e1 without any knowledge of the lore? I'm guessing yes but it isn't always the case

3 does a good job of catching everybody up on the lore/world. It also is a fantastic game.

  9. It would definitely help having played any of the games but I think you'd be fine. First season has a lot of time hops and flashbacks from different perspectives but it's not super tough to follow.

  10. It took me a while to realize season 1 was skipping around in time and I would see something and think to myself that the show made absolutely no sense. But once I reset my understanding of the show I really enjoyed season 1.

Definitely. I've played a little bit of the games but not much and I was fine, I preferred the show.

Season 1 is a lesson in how not to tell a story that hops around in time. Disaster of a set-up that was so easily avoidable, but it’s fun enough once everything clicks into place. Second season is a marked improvement over the first in all ways. Haven’t read the books or played the games.

I'd argue season 1 does a pretty terrible job because of all the time hopping/set up. Id say if you were vested/already aware of the lore S1 would be legit. Otherwise watch a YouTube video of the games/books slightly summarized.

Freya is so good as Ciri.

As someone who thought S1 was good not great, S2 has been a step up across the board. It’s just real high quality Witcher shit top to bottom.

  18. Three to go, really enjoying it, especially watching Ciri grow as a character this season

Just finished S2. Damn near perfect season of fantasy tv IMO

  20. Drewski

    Maybe so, maybe not.

I will preface by saying I haven't played the games nor read the books.

I found S2 to be a step up from S1 in many respects: no needlessly convoluted timeline scrambling, much better creature CGI, and a little more world and character building in the service of a bigger story.

Took a gander on the Witcher subreddit and damn do they hate it. Seems like—at least according to this comprehensive compilation—they deviated from the book's story pretty significantly. Without that background, I don't really mind because I have no frame of reference. But damn...that's definitely a lot of artistic liberty to take with significant plot points, ha.

I guess that sucks for people who love the books and were hoping to see a faithful adaptation but I don't really give a shit. I'm loving the show and will go with whatever story they feel like telling. Hopefully it stays good.

I do often wonder why adaptations seem to stray so far from what people already love though.

The best way to explain why scene for scene adaptation between book and film is typically terrible is to compare the films of Harry Potter 1/2 with Harry Potter 3-7. But at the same time, it's always pretty baffling when some adaptation choices are made that don't have to be (like Faramir's entirely different personality in LOTR).

But, as someone not invested in the games or books, this season kicked ass.

Haven't seen this season yet but I stopped caring about what the Witcher subreddit thought after they were basically frothing at the mouth with seething anger at the rumor that Ciri was going to be played by a POC actress

Honestly I've seen some people have an issue with the Yennefer casting and I can't understand that mindset at all lol.

  25. I’ve seen people complain about every woman that was cast.

    Triss especially.
