I would personally love to be car free but I don't think any of us think it's possible to get rid of cars entirely, but a lot of people would be happier if relying on public transportation and biking was safe and possible

I don’t think completely banning cars outright would be good but cities like Philadelphia and New York would be infinitely better if they were completely car free. I’m pretty sure car free cities exist in Europe or something and look great. Restricting and limiting car access in densely populated urban areas would be great and help the environment

I just got a new car after a year without one and could never go back. I work from home, and yet it was still awful being unable to go anywhere while my fiance was at work with her car. The only thing walkable for me is a gas station across a 55 mph road

Yeah I can probably get behind banning cars in some cities - it'll make air quality much better along with other environmental benefits and safety. Obviously the configuration of cities allow for walking, biking, or public transportation to be more convenient than driving anyway. Just simply put in rural areas and suburbs cars are always going to be a necessity because of how it's set up. The nice thing about driving is that I can go wherever I want whenever I want.

You’d obviously still need cars in a lot of the country but I think a lot of people don’t understand how much we could cut down on using cars if this country cared about public transportation and made it a priority.

I’m saying ban cars mostly as a joke, but I really wish I didn’t have to rely on one. Our public transportation near me non-existent and I have to drive around from time to time for work

Meh, I’m down for better zoning laws and stuff but telling people they can’t build and live in the type of home they want and in the area they want (within reason—mansions obviously can go) would not be good policy imo

the suburbs exist because zoning laws tell people they can only build certain types of buildings there

  19. You don't want people building whatever they want wherever they want

true, but that works both ways —it prevents businesses and other commercial buildings from taking over what could be someone’s home instead, and/or areas marked for conservation.

But yeah laws that stop even low rise apartment buildings from being built are stupid and dumb

to avoid the biggest problems with the suburbs you *do* want to allow commercial buildings. You can still zone out large shopping complexes, but the suburbs need more smaller commercial zoned stuff in order to help get cars off the road

yeah but then we’re just talking about urban sprawl and cities without end. Def not in for that
